National Nurses Week May 6-12

Lunsford G_ _002_.jpg

Perhaps the most famous nurse in our county was Garnett L. Radin (1902-1987) who founded and opened the first Vero Beach Memorial Hospital on May 12, 1932 in an unopened hotel on Old Dixie Highway. Radin moved to Vero Beach from Nebraska when she was 29 years old. in  The first three photos are of Mrs. Radin.

Below is a 1950's photo of the local Red Cross Nurses.

Emancipation Day in Florida

Emancipation was proclaimed in Tallahassee on May 20, 1865, 11 days after the end of the Civil War, and two years after the Proclamation first issued by President Abraham Lincoln freed those enslaved in Southern states. For this reason, Emancipation Day is traditionally celebrated on May 20 in Florida.
