Alumni Association Donates Seating for Senior Courtyard
From Carol Chelemer, AEHS Alumni Association
| |
|
Einstein High School (opening in 1962) was designed as a hollow square with a middle courtyard. This allowed outdoor light to permeate the interior classrooms. Possibly the architect envisioned an academic setting where teachers and students would stroll beneath a grove of trees discussing important issues and questions.
Alas, that was not to be. As a graduate (1966) I was never allowed entry into the courtyard. QUESTION: when was the courtyard opened to students?
Nowadays, the space is known as the Senior Courtyard. During lunchtime seniors have access to enjoy picnic lunches or just to hang out with friends. In recent years, however, that courtyard’s facilities had deteriorated—wooden benches had outlived their useful lives, metal ones had rusted, and weeds had overgrown the lawn. In discussion with Principal Mark Brown late last summer, he indicated a priority for renovating the Senior Courtyard. To that end the Alumni Association made a gift of picnic tables as an initial investment.
It's springtime and the Senior Courtyard’s aesthetics and utility have improved. In addition to lunchtime access, I’ve heard that teachers will occasionally conduct classes there. Maybe that original architect had something!

First in the Family Scholarship Recipients Chosen
Since 2014 through the generosity of alumni contributing to the Alumni Association, we have awarded scholarships to two very deserving seniors (male and female). The amount of each scholarship has grown to $3,000. In order to be considered the student must have excelled academically in STEM subjects, intends a career related to STEM subjects, shows proficiency in writing, has the respect of peers and staff for demonstrating qualities of kindness and generosity of spirit, and is the first in his/her family to attend college.
|
Litzy Torres will pursue a career in nursing. She’s been a dual enrollment student during junior and senior years, attending Edison Tech. At Edison she’s taken many courses directly related to healthcare; she is poised to receive a CNA (certified nursing assistant) credential before graduation. She will either attend Catholic University or Trinity College Washington, and expects to have a hospital-based internship. In a conversation, Litzy mentioned how happy she’s been in the hospital setting to be able to communicate and translate for Hispanic families, thereby reducing their fear of hospitals, medical staff etc. She is a true credit to Einstein High School.
| |
|
Davis Rodriguez’ interest in computer science began in middle school with HTML. That will be his major prior to pursuing a career in either software engineering or computational data sciences. Like Litzy, his transcript is filled with AP classes in which he excelled. This year he’s taken math classes at Montgomery College as well. To help his family Davis has held jobs since the age of 14. Over the past years he has advanced from being a lifeguard to being an Assistant Manager/Area Guard for his company. In the fall he’ll either attend UMBC or Penn State (leaning toward Penn State). Davis believes his teachers have prepared him well for college studies and he is grateful for the support he’s been given. With his work ethic and exceptional intelligence, Davis is sure to succeed.

Michael D. Wolf Memorial Scholarship Selects First Recipient
|
The Alumni Association is excited to add a new scholarship to its awards. This one is provided through the generosity of Barbara Wolf, wife of the late Michael D. Wolf (Class of 1964). I attended Einstein with Mike, although he was a lofty senior while I was a lowly sophomore. So I knew him by reputation and that was really remarkable. Mike was Student Government President and Captain of the “It’s Academic” team. He found time to be a Titan football player, a member of the Key Club, and a lab assistant. Go Getter—you bet.
Barbara wanted the $2500 scholarship to assist the recipient with college expenses. She wanted the recipient to reflect Michael Wolf’s significant qualities: a hard worker, a recognized leader, an individual well respected by peers and faculty, and a student demonstrating a talent for entrepreneurship.
| |
|
Anthony Sharifian is the first recipient of the Michael D. Wolf Memorial Scholarship. He has compiled an excellent academic record. He’s a member of the wrestling team and has been the team captain; his leadership style has been to encourage his teammates and provide an example of effort and accomplishment. He organized a number of clubs and interest groups at Einstein. His strong work ethic prompted him to hold parttime jobs, first at CAVA and then at Clyde’s. He’s used his earnings to learn about investment. Anthony has a businessman’s spirit and is determined to found a company marketing his own brand (with endorsements) of wrestling gear for women as well as men. Anthony plans to attend Howard University with a goal of running a biomedical company that develops cybernetics implants for people, in order to improve their lives.
The Alumni Association wants to especially thank Mr. Edgar Trigo, Career and College Center Director, for overseeing the selection of our scholarship recipients. We couldn’t do it without him!
All three of these students will be recognized at the May 22 Senior Awards Assembly.

Jill Nelson Debord
Class of 1968
January 11, 1950 - February 6, 2022
After a vibrant 72 years of life, Anne Jill Nelson-Debord passed away on February 6th, 2022. The fog had just started to rise out of the valley below, when Jill gently took her last breath, surrounded by family in her Portland, Oregon home. It took ALS to slow Jill down from her endless wanderings and travels around the planet, but it did not shrink her world. In her last years, she immersed herself in her family, friends, and caregivers, both giving and receiving what we all seek in life, love.
.
She graduated from Albert Einstein High School in Kensington, Maryland in 1968 and curious about what it was like to live out west, enrolled in The University of Colorado at Boulder where she earned a degree in social work. She immediately struck out to see the world by joining VISTA, and then moved to Texas to work as a counselor for teenagers. Finding meaning in helping others, she earned a master’s degree in social work from Portland State University in 1981.
Jill waited patiently to find the right man but when she met Ray Debord, she knew she had found the smart, loving partner she was looking for. As she liked to say, he was the love of her life. They were married on Saturday, August 10, 1996 in Portland, Oregon.
After Jill retired in 2004, she dedicated herself to caring for the natural world. She spent many an enjoyable day working with the Portland Audubon Society helping to preserve habitat and educate others on the value of our precious planet earth
.
Jill is survived by her two-step children Dennis Debord and Barbara Debord, as well as her beloved step-grandchildren-Jesse, Monica and Aden. Her five siblings-Joyce Bailey, Terry Nelson, Wayne Nelson, Kevin Nelson and Carl Nelson miss her dearly and treasure all the adventures they went on together.
Editor's note: Thank you Neal Zarin for providing information.
