Youth Program Financial Literacy Class Success!
On October 11, 2023, 11 participants of the Norwich CDO Workforce's Out-of-School Youth Program took part in a Financial Literacy Class. Presented by Sidney Federal Credit Union’s Member Engagement Manager Ashley Krizman, the youths gained a valuable understanding of personal financial management.
Topics of discussion included budgeting, savings, understanding credit, setting financial goals, and the basics of banking.
The youths, aged 17 through 22, gave a lot of positive feedback after class. One youth stated, “I never thought about setting any goals at my age.” Another stated they appreciated learning about the pitfalls of credit, but also learning that it’s a tool toward building a good credit score.
Ashley provided an interactive experience, complete with refreshments, enjoyed by all.

The Road to Work Has Unexpected Curves—HF’s story
By: Kathy DeAngelo, Sr. Employment & Training Counselor
HF is a long-time, WIOA Out of School Youth who enrolled with our agency in the fall of 2019 after graduating from College with a Bachelors in Environmental Sciences with the help of ACCES-VR. She had a chronic neurological disorder that was under control at the time and was looking for help finding work.
Under DEI 8, our Disability Resource Coordinator (DRC) helped her find a position, but she was unsuccessful. Then COVID shut everything down. During that next year, her condition worsened, and she applied for SSI. After a surgical procedure to implant a device to help control seizures, and a 9-month recovery period, we began to look for work again last fall—but it was unsuccessful as she was still weak and had been out of the workforce for several years.
In Jan. 2023, CDO provided a paid work experience at a local government agency to allow HF to utilize and improve her clerical and computer skills and to develop a current, positive work reference. She was extremely successful, and her stamina increased. We extended this work experience through June 2023 and began job search efforts again. Several Integrated Resource Team meetings were held during this timeframe and HF utilized the efforts of Workforce staff to upgrade her resume and develop stronger cover letters.
HF was hired by a local organization as a full-time Typist beginning on 10/10/23. HF was told that she qualified for this position due to the 6-month clerical work experience provided by CDO. Her long-term goal is to gain experience and be promoted to technical positions within the organization so that she can utilize her college degree.
Despite a pandemic and a major health scare, surgery and recovery, HF persevered. With the help of her CDO Workforce team and her own determination, she is on her way to successful career!
Congratulations HF!!
