AWARENESS

Transgender Awareness Month

The month of November is devoted to spreading awareness and educating individuals on transgender communities and important issues trans people face.

Transgender Awareness Week is November 13th-19th and spotlights the contributions trans people have brought to society, as well as addressing the struggles facing the transgender community. During this week, transgender people and their allies take action to educate the community about transgender people. They share stories and experiences, and promote advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence that affect the transgender community.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is November 20th. Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed on this day every year to honor the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. Transgender writer and advocate, Gwendolyn Ann Smith, started Transgender Day of Remembrance to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was murdered in 1998. That first vigil honored all the transgender people who were lost to violence that year and has now become an annual memorial event. According to Gwendolyn Smith, this memorial serves numerous purposes:

  • It raises public awareness of hate crimes against trans people.
  • It publicly mourns and honors the lives of victims of hate crimes who might otherwise be forgotten.
  • It expresses love and respect for all trans people, who face indifference, erasure, and hatred.
  • It reminds cisgender people that trans people are their children, parents, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.
  • It gives allies a chance to step forward and stand in vigil, memorializing those who’ve died from anti-trans violence.

True change starts with knowledge. Take a look back at the history of transgender visibility with a timeline of notable events (to the right) compiled by Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
