Club Meetings

Last Month’s Meeting

On October 12, the club welcomed Susan Baxter from the League of Women Voters to the Coronado Library’s Winn Room and heard a well-organized and very thorough presentation on the various propositions appearing on the November ballot. The presentation was recorded and is available for viewing on the club website. (www.coronadodemocrats.com)

Upcoming General Meeting

Our next General Meeting will be held on Saturday, November 19, in the library’s Winn Room. Social time begins at 10:30 a.m., with the meeting following at 11 a.m. Our speaker will be Coronado resident and club member Kevin Ashley, who will share some of the fascinating results from his research into the role of many black American families who helped make Coronado into the Emerald City we see today. You won’t want to miss hearing Kevin discuss his research and the surprises he encountered along the way.

GO Team Report

The GO Team held its kickoff on Saturday, October 8 at the home of Patti Flores-Charter and Chuck Charter. Volunteers received their canvassing packets and materials, including door hangers, and received a final briefing before heading to their precincts. The kickoff was timed to coincide with mailing of the vote-by-mail ballots, which Coronado residents began to receive on that Saturday or a few days afterward.

Some of our volunteers already have finished canvassing their initial precincts, which in most cases is in their own neighborhoods, and have requested additional lists and materials in order to spread the word to as many like-minded voters as possible and encourage them to vote in this crucial midterm election.

This week, we had a new, young volunteer, Chloe, join the GO Team. She was recruited by our super canvasser, Donna Manning. Thank you Donna!

Our initial canvassing will continue until the end of October, at which time the County Democratic Party will analyze the data and schedule final events around the county where the need is greatest. Some of our volunteers will canvass for individual candidates' campaigns during the final weekend before Election Day. Candidates such as 49th District Congressman Mike Levin and Catherine Blakespear, who's running for State Senate in the 38th District, are in tight contests and could use some help with the final push.

To volunteer for Catherine, go to https://www.mobilize.us/?q=catherine%20blakespear and find an event nearby, in the North County coastal area.

To volunteer for Mike, go to

CUSD Candidate Summary

by Coronado First*

The following Candidate Summary was prepared by a non-partisan group called Coronado First to help inform the entire Coronado community about the upcoming CUSD School Board election. This is not the work or opinion of the Coronado Democratic Club. The club has not endorsed any candidate in any local race for this election.

*Since 2012 Coronado has become a very divided and partisan place. Coronado First wants to see elections in Coronado return to the days when residents elected other residents to solve local problems. Coronado First seeks an end to hidden agendas or partisan, national, political interference in our city. There are 4 seats on the CUSD Board being contested, and this year your vote is more important than ever.

One 2-year term (pick one)

*Renee Cavanaugh is a longtime resident and a former teacher in Coronado with 15 years classroom experience. She has been very active in the Coronado Schools Foundation and with many other community groups. Before she become a teacher, Renee worked in finance with government contractors. She has an MBA, and this will help her navigate the process of getting CUSD to basic aid. (Qualified

Nicole Boucher is a nurse with no known experience in the schools or the community. She proudly admits she is unvaccinated and claims the vaccine causes modifications to your DNA, a conspiracy theory spread by QAnon. She also skipped several of the candidate forums. (Not qualified)

Gerri Machin is the Executive Director of We The Parents Coronado, a very small group affiliated with a number of national groups dedicated to disrupting and ultimately defunding public schools. She claims prior experience teaching, but has not shared what she taught or where. She spent the last two years waging culture wars against the school board. Gerri referred to book banning and healthy organ removal at several candidate forums. If elected, Gerri said she wants to fire Karl Mueller. Endorsed by the local GOP, the radical fundamentalist Awaken Church/RMNNT group, the anonymous group Coronado School Board Report, and a Trump endorsed Congressional candidate (Kevin Kiley). (Not qualified)

* Vote for Renee Cavanaugh.

Three 4-year terms (pick three)

*Helen Anderson-Cruz is a current CUSD trustee running for re-election. She may not be perfect, but she has spent her entire career as a professional educator, and she possesses both the qualifications and experience necessary to be a solid board member. Helen has had children and grandchildren attend CUSD. (Qualified)

*Stephanie Anderson is a lifelong resident of Coronado and small business owner. Her children graduated from CUSD schools. She has been active in numerous school and community groups, including serving as President of the Coronado High School Football Boosters from 2017-2021 and on the Islander Sports Foundation Board from 2019-2021. Stephanie is passionate about education and has proven to be a quick study of the issues faced by CUSD. She is running to give all children the best education available. (Qualified)

*Alexia Palacios-Peters is an attorney who has a degree in education and prior teaching experience. She is a Navy spouse, and her 3 children currently attend CUSD schools. She is active in numerous community groups including Safe Harbor and the League of Wives and helped coach the JV tennis team at CHS. Alexia is committed to improving the schools and ending the divisiveness at board meetings. (Qualified)

*Malachi (Mal) Sandie is a retired Navy officer with 4 children, 2 of whom are still attending CUSD, including a special needs child. He believes the use of masks and vaccines during Covid was necessary. He believes CUSD’s educators do an excellent job delivering a high-quality education that prepares students for life after CHS, no matter what career path they might choose. Mal is a straightforward guy with no hidden agendas. (Qualified)

Mike Iversen is a local businessman with children in CUSD who did not like how the CUSD handled its response to the county and state mandates on Covid. He also does not support the 4x4 schedule at CHS and he thinks only parents should serve on the board. He has no known prior experience in the schools or the community. (No opinion)

Scot Youngblood is a retired Navy surgeon who oddly opposed the use of masks and vaccines during Covid. He misquotes a 2019 (pre-Covid) World Health Organization study on the effectiveness of masks as justification for this position. He has said he wants to fire Karl Mueller. Scot claims to be nonpartisan, but he is endorsed by several very partisan groups including the GOP, the radical fundamentalist Awaken Church/RMNNT group, a Trump endorsed Congressional candidate (Kevin Kiley), Mayor Richard Bailey, and an anonymous group called Coronado School Board Report. (Not Qualified)

Lisa Meglioli is an enigma and she skipped several candidate forums. She has no known prior experience in the schools or the community. Although she has 5 children, it does not appear any of them attend school in the CUSD. She is endorsed by The Lincoln Club, the GOP, the radical fundamentalist Awaken Church/RMNNT group, a Trump endorsed Congressional candidate (Kevin Kiley), and a group called Coronado School Board Report. Received her “candidate training” thru the Awaken Church. (Not qualified)

Mark Scheurer is a former Navy physician who is running a phantom campaign. He opposed the public safety measures in place during Covid. He has no known experience in school or community affairs. He made no appearances at the candidate forums and some of his replies to written questions for candidates never even answered the question asked. Mark is endorsed by an anonymous group called Coronado School Board Report which appears to be run by the members of We The Parents Coronado. (Not Qualified

*Vote for any three of these qualified candidates: Mal Sandie, Alexia Palacios-Peters, Stephanie Anderson, or Helen Anderson-Cruz.

Review 2022 Propositions

Proposition 1 - Vote YES

Proposition 1 would amend California’s Constitution to expressly protect an individual’s right to reproductive freedom, including the right to choose to have an abortion and to choose or refuse contraceptives. Enshrining reproductive freedom in our state Constitution is vital in the wake of the United State Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade.

Even in California, Republicans are attacking women’s reproductive freedoms. For instance, they opposed amending California’s fetal homicide law (Penal Code §187) to drop the requirement that all stillbirths be investigated by a coroner (who, in 48 of 50 California counties, is the sheriff). The law’s original intent when passed in the early 1970’s was to prosecute third party actors who killed or assaulted a pregnant woman, causing her to deliver a stillbirth. However, in 2017, Kings County District Attorney Keith Fagundes charged Adora Perez with murder under the statute after she delivered a stillbirth and tested positive for methamphetamine. Faced with possible life in prison, Perez pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and served over four years in prison before being released in March 2022 on a writ of habeas corpus that was supported by Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office. Abortion rights advocates, worried that Perez’s case might open the door to criminal prosecutions of people seeking to terminate pregnancies, pushed for an amendment to §187 (AB 2333), ending mandatory coroner investigations of stillbirths. Governor Newsom signed the new law on September 27.

Nonetheless, do not take Californians’ right of reproductive freedom for granted. If the GOP obtains control of Congress and the Presidency in 2024, they may enact a national abortion ban. When in conflict, federal law preempts state law. (U.S. Const. art. VI., § 2.) Preemption applies regardless of whether the conflicting law is enumerated in a state’s constitution. This would mean abortion would be illegal in every state, including California.

Should Coronado form or join a

Community Choice Aggregator (CCA)?

By Carrie Downey

A CCA is a joint power authority authorized to purchase electric generation for all of the electricity accounts within a city or cities. The CCA would then have the electricity delivered to the local investor-owned utility, in our case SDG&E.  There are currently two CCAs in San Diego County: San Diego Community Power (SDCP), made up of Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, National City, San Diego, and unincorporated areas of the County; and Clean Energy Alliance composed of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos, Solana Beach, and Vista. Coronado and Poway have not yet joined a CCA.

Both CCAs are overseen by boards of directors which act by majority vote with one vote per city. CCAs only procure electricity; SDG&E will still be providing transmission, distribution, billing, and infrastructure for all local electricity sales in the SDG&E service territory. A cost/benefit study by Coronado will allow City Council and residents to determine how effective joining or starting a CCA would be in comparison to SDG&E’s projected rates going forward. A study would allow comparison between the two CCAs for per hour cost and environmental benefit. Once Coronado decides whether it is economical and environmentally better to join a CCA, every customer has the option to opt out if they wish to continue receiving their electricity generation from SDG&E. Coronado should begin a study so Council and residents can review the options.

Hospitality Committee Report

SAVE THE DATE for our Holiday Happy Hour!

December 9, 2022, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Gail and Bob Bardin.

Invitations will be sent to all members in a few weeks. In the meantime, the Hospitality Committee will need help. We will be needing all the things that make a party great: food, drinks, music. If you want to provide or sponsor ($$) any of these things, please contact Jenna McIntosh.

If you attended this event last year, then you remember that it was the most fun event of the year! This year should be even more fun, especially if we have lots to celebrate after the elections.

Another SAVE THE DATE: April 22, 2023 for the Blue Wave Brunch!

This is going to be another super-fun event. Plan to be there!

Now that we are meeting in person, we need members who are willing to prepare a snack to share at the General Meetings. The social time before the meeting starts is a pleasant way to meet and greet other members over a cup of coffee and a treat.

If you would like to help the Hospitality Committee in any of these ways, please let Jenna know.
