Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In October, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue:
  • Completed the extension of the Dog Run box culvert on the north side of Route 7 between Northfalls Court and Utterback Store Road.
  • Continued drilling noise barrier foundations and earth-moving activities between Reston Avenue and Utterback Store Road.
  • Began construction of noise barriers.
  • Performed storm sewer installation between Reston Avenue and Reston Parkway, and completed storm sewer installation between Reston Parkway and Utterback Store Road.
  • Performed cement stabilization of the subgrade and placed cement-treated aggregate for future westbound Route 7 lanes between Great Passage Boulevard and Amanda Drive.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way
  • Completed construction of the common duct bank between Delta Glen Court and Carpers Farm Way.
  • Continued earth-moving operations between Baron Cameron Avenue and Carpers Farm Way.
  • Completed storm sewer installation and performed fine grading and cement stabilization of the subgrade along eastbound Route 7 between Baron Cameron Avenue and Colvin Forest Drive.


  • Stage 2 construction pending right-of-way acquisition.


  • Continued relocation of communication utilities.
  • Continued the realignment of Colvin Run.
  • Installed sheet pile in the Colvin Run area east of Carpers Farm Way.
  • Completed installation of the west half of the box culvert under Carper's Farm Way.


  • Continued storm sewer and completed water line installation for Route 7 westbound lanes between Faulkner Drive and Trotting Horse Lane.  
  • Began fine grading and cement stabilization of the subgrade for Route 7 westbound lanes between Faulkner Drive and Trotting Horse Lane.   
  • Completed storm sewer and water line installation for Route 7 westbound lanes between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.
  • Continued construction of stormwater management pond near Trotting Horse Lane.
  • Continued earth-moving operations and completed fine grading for Route 7 westbound lanes between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.

Design work continues for lighting and landscaping. Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

Upcoming Work
Construction activities along Route 7 will be ongoing through the fall and winter months, and additional traffic changes will occur along Route 7. Please see the project website for additional information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.

Work in the Colvin Run/Difficult Run area is ongoing, and public access to the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail will be maintained.
