News from Thanks-Giving Square and The Thanks-Giving Foundation  |   November 2016

November has been dubbed the national month of gratitude. As the seasons change and holidays with family and friends quickly approach, it is a great time to acknowledge the things your receive daily and - as a Native American proverb states - to "give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way." At Thanks-Giving Square, we have much to be grateful for in 2016. We are thankful for the support of donors and volunteers that believe in our mission. We are thankful for faith leaders in our community that have joined together to use thanksgiving as a way to heal division. And we are grateful for our founders who dedicated Thanks-Giving Square as the spiritual heart of our city 40 years ago this month.

Thanks-Giving Square honored with award

What began as a multi-faith task force in 2015 has grown into a broad and diverse coalition of Dallas' faith leaders dedicated to service, hope, and a shared vision for the North Texas community. United to create and support a community of respect and compassion for all, the group is frequently called upon to lead the city in prayer, respond to crisis events, and faciliatate dialogue between faith groups.  These efforts have been acknowledged both locally and nationally.

On October 26, t he United Nations Association Dallas Chapter honored the recent collaboration of Faith Forward Dallas at Thanks-Giving Square and Dallas Mayor Mike RawlingsThe award recognizes that "their partnership offered the opportunity for millions in the nation and the world to witness a community come together to seek healing and understanding when Dallas was struck by violence in early July."

Thanks-Giving Square: Landscape and Architecture

On September 26 an audience of students, artists, architectural critics, and anyone curious about the meaning of Thanks-Giving Square's design had the privilege of learning from Dr. Richard Brettell at the Interfaith Council Speaker Series. Dr. Brettell's personal relationships with architect Phillip Johnson and his associates allowed for very informative stories of the development of the site. Original models of the Square ( recently reconditioned by the Model Shop at HKS, Inc.) were displayed for a closer look.

Dr. Brettell characterized Thanks-Giving Square as a "one of a kind center" for inspiration, healing, and multi-faith activities. The inspiration of Philip Johnson, combined with the thoughtful vision of the founders, created a beacon with a unique architectural space built for a purpose.

More information about the art and architecture of Thanks-Giving Square will be shared in upcoming newsletters as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of this unique space.
