Sussex County conservation poster contest winners recognized

Georgetown, Del., Nov. 18, 2022 - Sussex Conservation District (SCD) recently recognized winners of the annual conservation poster contest. Posters were judged on the 2022 theme, "Healthy Soil: Healthy Life." SCD received 116 entries across five grade categories; over 90 entries were received in the 4-6 grade category.

Bucks Branch Tax Ditch

Severe erosion plagued a section of the Bucks Branch tax ditch. SCD installed encapsulated soil lifts to repair erosion and stabilize the ditch bank. The soil lifts are planted with deep rooted native vegetation which will provide wildlife habitat and reduce nutrient and sediment loads entering the Chesapeake Bay via the Nanticoke River.

Bridgeville Branch

SCD designed and recently completed construction on a wetland floodplain along Main St. in Bridgeville, Del. The design provides water quality by slowing water velocity. The snags, tree stumps along the floodplain, provides an invaluable habitat to wildlife.

NRCS Releases Accomplishments Report Highlighting Conservation Results in Delaware

the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Delaware released its fiscal year (FY) 2022 Accomplishments Report. This report highlights the conservation achievements attained through NRCS conservation programs and services in conjunction with conservation partners. It offers insight into delivery of technical and financial assistance to further advance conservation and its benefits to Delaware’s agricultural community and beyond.
