Are you travelling with your dog for the holidays?
Be sure to take time before you leave to take some safety precautions so you and your dog have a safe, fun trip.
- Check with your vet to make sure your dog is up to date on all vaccines and is in good health.
- Make sure your dog is wearing ID with current information--and seriously consider a microchip if not already inserted!
- Be sure to pack enough food and water! I always pack several days extra!
- Pack a canine first aid kit and be sure that you know your dog's normal vital signs. Consider including a paper giving permission for emergency medical
treatment and stating that you will be responsible for all costs.
- Consider crating or seatbelting your dog for safety while travelling.
- Carry a current photo of your dog with you--useful for making posters if your dog gets away from you.
- Take along an extra leash and collar.
- Make frequent stops for exercise and water.

Portia's Piece
Hello everyone! Mom (aka Betsy) has been talking about something called "Thanksgiving" coming and how it is a time that everyone should remember to be grateful for all the good things in their lives. So I thought about it and decided that I should share 12 of the things that I am most thankful for!
- my family--human and puppy!
- my food bowl that arrives twice daily without fail (Of course, I would be MORE thankful if it arrived 4 times daily.)
- belly rubs
- time that Mom spends with me--EVEN bath time
- chances to visit lots of people and share snuggles and smiles with them
- a warm house to live in
- my comfy crate and bed
- toys, toys, and more toys
- being able to go to the training center and play the sniffing game
- yummy treats
- knowing that I have been loved my entire life--some of my friends have not been so lucky!
- all of the new friends I make at Redfern Love, Portia

Keeping Your Dog Safe During Hunting Season
Late fall and winter are excellent times to explore the great outdoors with your dog, but we need to be extra careful during hunting season. Here's a few tips to get you outside and back home, safe and sound.
- Always keep your dog on a lead. Both dogs and wildlife are easily spooked during hunting season and they can bolt without much warning. Keep your dog at your side by always using a manageable-length lead. Six feet is a good rule of thumb.
- Get your orange or fluorescent green or pink on. Skip the muted jackets and make sure both you and your dog are visible. Large, dark shapes can be indistinguishable from one another, and your Labrador Retriever can look an awful lot like a deer.
- Light up the night. With shorter days and longer nights, it makes sense to illuminate yourself and your dog. There are lots of options available, from light-up leads to flashing clip lights. Get some for you and Fido. Be brilliant!
With a little preparation, you'll both get to enjoy the crisp winter air safely.

A Very Merry Dog-Friendly Holiday:
How to Treat Safely
None of us can resist slipping our pup a treat or two. Tis the season, after all. Let your dog savor the treats of the season, just make certain they're dog-friendly. Read on for a few more tips to make your holiday merry.
- No bones about it. Skip the chance to give your dog any bones from the table. Bones can be a choking hazard at worst, and a digestive nightmare at best if they don't normally have them. Save the bones for soup, and consider giving your pup an approved dog treat, like a Kong, garnished with a little peanut butter or cheese.
- Skip the sugar. All of it. Dogs don't need the added calories or tooth decay. Just like us, fresh vegetables are probably a better choice. Most dogs enjoy baby carrots or raw, fresh green beans. Make treating into a game, and your dog will be doubly happy.
- Keep tummy troubles to a minimum by treating your dog with a special toy, an extra walk or some quality cuddle time. Remember, it's the thought that counts and your dog is certain to appreciate time with you more than any edible treat!

We're So Thankful for What You Did
for
Chiron & Tim
Just one final thank you this year to all the incredible folks that volunteered their time and space to help Chiron with his service dog training and ultimate match-made-in-heaven with Tim.
The most recent report from Ohio is that they are the best team ever and that Tim is continuing Chiron's training. Chiron is now able to ride on the bus together and can take Tim's sweatshirts! (And just LOOK at the smiles on both of their faces!)
They are off to a strong start and plan to make 2020 a memorable year. It's the beginning of a new adventure for both, and we're so grateful
you came along for Chiron's incredible journey.

What Will My Puppy Be Like?
You don't have to wonder any longer. The AKC now has a new evaluation, called the AKC Temperament Test. Designed to evaluate dogs in six categories, the results can provide insights into your pup's temperament, depending on how they react to a variety of stimuli.
