~ November 2023 ~

Hello CVOA,

Message from the President . . . . .

Greetings CVOA members,

Sugarloaf attracted an exuberant crowd for Homecoming Weekend. In addition to the usual snow fever, I think people were curious about the new lift and trails. Despite efforts of the weather gods to dampen our spirits, members turned out for CVOA events. For two days the CVOA table in the main lodge had a steady flow of current and new members.T he Parker’s opened their garage on Saturday afternoon for a member “Meet ‘n’ Greet”. The Neal Trask Shooting Range hosted a noon BBQ on Sunday and attendees were treated to a spectacular double rainbow over the Bigelow’s along with great eats. Thank you to everyone whose efforts made this weekend so successful. To Mike and Jeanette Parker who are always there for the planning and running of CVOA events, we appreciate all you do for CVOA. I want to recognize the steady presence of members attending to the CVOA table at the Main Lodge. These include Steve and Elaine Smith, Mike and Jeanette Parker, Paul and Linda Treworthy, Dave and Roni Emery, Peg and Steve Whitcomb, Ann and Kelly Dooling and Don and Barbara Hathorn.

So, what is new in the Valley? My favorites include a new chair lift, trails and snowmaking, a new parking lot, probably to be creatively named “G”, new homes and additions, moving the peanut butter and jelly at Fotter’s, paving part of the lot at Mountainside Groceries, and a new water tank just above the Timbers.

Sugarloaf is going to recognize Don Fowler, one of CVOA’s founding members on Saturday evening, December 9. It is estimated that Don has skied an amazing lifetime 75 million vertical feet. He has made numerous contributions to Sugarloaf area communities. Don doesn’t go out and ski each day to achieve these heights, but by virtue of his love of the sport and the companionship of friends, he has reached this lofty number. Tickets are $30 per person and details of the celebration are contained in this Newsletter. Proceeds benefit the Maine Ski and Snowboard Museum.

Range News

Weekly Shooting Schedule is Ending Soon

Hello Range Members,

October saw mixed weather, but lots of folks still came out and used the Range. We started off with a very successful Homecoming BBQ and ended the month with our regular 5 Stand and Trap Shoots. Also, as is common, lots of members siting in rifles for hunting season.

Our Weekly 5 Stand and Trap shoots will finish for the season on Sunday, November 12 after the Trap Shoot. We will be bringing in the Archery Net and some targets, too. The smaller box targets will remain.

New Membership Applications are available for 2024. Any new member that signs up will get the rest of 2023 as well as all of 2024 included with their membership.

Remember, Pistol and Rifle Ranges will remain open throughout the winter. Steel targets have been reinstalled on the 100yd Rifle Range. The "plink" from hitting the target is very satisfying! Remember to follow all posted safety rules and maintain at least 25 foot distance while shooting at metal targets. For paper targets, you may move as close as you like.

Folks are getting used to the new electric gate. Please do not try to drive around the gate. Boulders will be moved to both sides and you may damage your car if you do so. Also, when exiting, the gate will remain open while multiple cars exit. The same is not true of cars entering. The gate will close after 12 seconds and may damage your car and/or break the gate. Only one car at a time should enter.

Enjoy the rest of your Fall.

Celebrate Don Fowler

Join fellow Sugarloafers in celebrating long time Sugarloafer Don Fowler as he crests 75 million vertical feet of skiing on the slopes of Sugarloaf, a testament to perseverance and his love for the sport. We'll gather to share stories, enjoy good food and drink in the King Pine Room on Saturday, December 9th.

Don was one of the founders of CVOA. Over the years he has been an active participant in the club’s many activities and also provided extensive pro bono legal assistance to the club. He contributed significantly to making CVOA the organization it is today.

Homecoming Driveway Meet ‘n Greet

Mike and Jeannette Parker’s Driveway Meet ‘n Greet held on Saturday of Homecoming Weekend was attended by 40 CVOA members….old and new. The driveway party pivoted to the garage when the sky opened up. The rain did little to dampen this group of outdoor enthusiasts. Much like returning to summer camp when you were a child, albeit, we’re all older!….everyone was happy to see their Sugarloaf friends once again. Handshakes, hugs, smiles and laughter abound!! Thank you to all who attended. Typical of CVOA events, the tables were filled with a tasty selection of appetizers and desserts.

Make plans to join us next year, Saturday October 12, 2024 at 4:00 p for this FUN event!

🍁🍂   THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  🌭🍔

It couldn’t have happened without you! The sky cleared right on cue at 11:00…..many took pictures of the beautiful double rainbow 🌈 …..a sign from above that after a break for a few years it was time to bring back the Range BBQ. Ninety-three members attended! For many, it was their first time at the Range. It was an opportunity for friends, old and new, to meet and catch-up on the past summer and look ahead to the upcoming season.

Like all CVOA events, there was no shortage of food. Our membership has many great cooks who consistently and generously contribute to events. A special shoutout of appreciation to BBQ Grill-Master, Dan Baillargeon, who rolled up his sleeves and manned the grill with Assistant, Ralph Alfieri.

Special thanks to Range Chair and Secretary, Ray and Diane Stone, for their continued leadership of the Range and for recruitment of volunteers for the BBQ. They are the face of this top notch, world class Range. For more information on becoming a Range member, reach out to them.

“Many hands…”; “It takes a village…”. You’ve heard them all! It applies to every CVOA event. Like every club, group or organization, it takes many people to make events happen. CVOA has the BEST members!! Check out the CVOA Calendar and Newsletters for upcoming events.
