ChrisMix

ChrisMix is Back for 2022!

The ChrisMix is an annual holiday event where commercial real estate professionals get together and celebrate the holiday.

ChrisMix is full of the fun and festivities that holiday parties are known for and happens to be the largest event of the year to connect with others in the Los Angeles commercial real estate community. Building owners and managers mingle freely, and energetic exhibitors display their festive tables to help facilitate discussion about the industry and as a way to get to know each other.

We are currently accepting registrations for booth sales and sponsorships.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

If you missed the TOBY and Awards of Excellence Gala this year, you missed a great event! Congratulations again to our 2022 award recipients:

TOBY Awards: Columbia Square, Ivy Station, Del Amo Crossing, Robertson Plaza, 5670 Wilshire, Aero Long Beach, 207 Goode, 909/999 North Pacific Coast Highway, and Union Bank Plaza.

Awards of Excellence: – Finland Alejo, Bert Dezzutti, Dan Glick, Paul Gnasso, Parisa Mezrahi, Tara Pamplona, Nathan Sovich, Tiffany Truong, and Renee Watkinson.

Thank you to our award participants, committee, annual partners, and sponsors for helping to create such a special event. As we begin to close out 2022, we hope you will join us in participating in our final programs and events. You can find the most up-to-date information on our calendar.

We are very excited to bring back our Annual Holiday Drive this year and our members rose to the occasion. We’ve exceeded our goal of 100 participants, but we know we can do even better so we've extended the deadline to participate to November 11th. Please consider supporting this year’s drive and register today! Also, if you are interested in volunteering on the toy sort and pick-up day, please email Tonya Burns to sign up.

Finally, November 8th is election day, and we encourage our members to support Angelenos Against Higher Property Taxes by voting NO on measures ULA and SP. Measure ULA is an $800 million, 34% property tax increase and will increase transfer taxes on most BOMA/GLA members by twelvefold. Measure SP would impose an $0.08/sqft parcel tax on all property owners which would be directed towards parks and other projects. Los Angeles already has $150 million in unallocated park funds that should be used before homeowners are forced to pay another tax hike.

Measures ULA and SP are just another attempt to dismantle Prop 13 and BOMA/GLA supports the maintenance of Prop 13 protections on commercial properties. Join us in defeating ULA and SP.

See What You Missed

And the Award Went To:

With over 500 attendees in attendance at this year’s TOBY and Awards of Excellence Gala, ten building management teams were honored with a 2022 TOBY Award. If you've entered your building into the TOBY's, or you provide service to a building that has entered, you know the dedication and work it takes to prepare for this prestigious award.  We also honored the winners of an Award of Excellence for their dedicated service to the CRE industry.

BOMA/GLA congratulates the building’s teams and service providers who are passionate about the management of their assets by providing the best service to their tenants and the communities they serve and the individuals who strive for excellence.

Getting to Know Rudy Ocon

Chief Engineer, Tishman Speyer

Tishman Speyer's Chief Engineer, Rudy Ocon, has been a member of BOMA/GLA for over 20 years. He values his membership in BOMA/GLA primarily for the professional development opportunities and networking events provided. The Annual TOBY Awards is his favorite event because he gets to learn more about the buildings and the people who made them great.

When he's not working, Rudy likes to spend time with his family reading and watching movies. They are currently binge-watching Star Wars - Andor. Rudy also enjoys traveling. His favorite place to vacation is Hawaii where he never misses a chance to stop at his favorite restaurant, Buzz's Original Steakhouse. Don't be surprised if you see Rudy at a local jam session in Hawaii after he's had his fill of his favorite food. Without a doubt, if he can still play drums like he did in high school, he’d be jamming out to some of his favorite Backstreet Boys songs.

Rudy’s best advice to new members and those new to the industry is to participate actively by subscribing to newsletters, going to events, and volunteering for committees. Because of BOMA/GLA, he has been able to advance in his career and bring cutting-edge practices to his buildings. Currently, he is excited about upcoming building electrification projects.

Rudy is BOMA/GLA’s 2021 Engineer of the Year and a contributing member of the BOMA/GLA Chief Engineer Special Interest Group (SIG).

BOMA International Releases Highly Anticipated COVID-19 Impact Study

BOMA International has officially released the findings of its COVID-19 Commercial Real Estate Impact Study, which assesses the broad effects of the pandemic on commercial real estate – and, ultimately, its financial impact.

Conducted in Q2 of this year, the Study focuses on:

  • Tenant attitudes toward in-person workspaces
  • Opportunities that senior commercial property owners and operators are eying for the future
  • Broad industry trends

The Study indicates that significant changes could be afoot.

It dives deep into both employer and employee desire to return to the office, nationwide occupancy trends, desired hybrid work schedules, changes to office size/layout, and the current economic outlook.

While the Study ultimately concludes that concerns over returning to the office are dissipating, businesses’ and employees’ relationship with their physical office space is continuing to evolve in the post-COVID market.

Defeat Measures ULA and SP

Election Day is less than two weeks away, and some of the biggest property tax increases in the history of our city will be on the ballot: Measures ULA and SP.

Now is the time to ask your network to VOTE NO on ULA and SP.

Measure ULA would increase the transfer tax rate for most BOMA/GLA members by 5% - a twelvefold increase. This would significantly reduce the value of our assets, damage the economy, and harm both tenants and property owners alike.

Measure SP would impose an 8 cent/square foot parcel tax on homeowners and our members, impacting virtually every Angeleno’s cost of living.

Ballots have been mailed to voters and Election Day is November 8 – remember to vote “No” on both ULA and SP and send our campaign website to your friends, family, and colleagues.

In Leadup to November Election, BOMA/GLA PAC Engages a Record-Breaking 52 Candidates in over 20 Jurisdictions

BOMA/GLA PAC has spent over a decade supporting pro-industry candidates for public office and engaging them on our issues.

This year, though, BOMA/GLA PAC broke new ground by interviewing 52 candidates for local and state office in 22 jurisdictions across Greater Los Angeles. Of these candidates, our PAC supported over two-dozen candidates who distinguished themselves in their support of commonsense pro-business policies to grow the economy, enhance public safety, and meaningfully address homelessness.

Our PAC also took a leading role in broader business coalition efforts, with BOMA/GLA Advocacy staff chairing the LA County Business Federation (BizFed) PAC and playing leadership roles in the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce PACs.

Throughout 2022, BOMA/GLA PAC expanded our political impact and educated a record-breaking amount of candidates on the most important issues impacting commercial property owners and managers.

Learn more about the PAC and get involved today.

FUN FACT OF THE DAY

Give Someone a Dollar Day takes place on November 3 every year.

It’s a good day to give a dollar to someone. Despite the fact that a dollar appears to be worthless these days, there are still some things that a dollar can buy. On this day, you can give a dollar to someone you know or someone you’ve never met. You can also give a dollar to anyone who appears to be in need or deserves it.
