A Piece of Our Past

When the development of Millinocket commenced, the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad Company added a station and built a spur track from the main line to the site of the proposed mill. Several special excursion trains actually brought tourists to Millinocket just to see the mill being constructed. Passengers could get off the train and walk or take a horse-drawn hack into town.

Municipal Updates

Wastewater Department

We would like to remind the residents of Millinocket to please NOT flush wipes, paper towels, grease, plastics, Q-tips or anything other than toilet paper into the sewer system. Even the "flushable" wipes will clog the sewer system. These items are causing extreme plugs to the sewer system and costly maintenance to our pumping stations. We would like to thank the residents for this consideration.

Wastewater Treatment Facility Superintendent

East Millinocket Police Department

EMPD has responded to 9530 calls for service to date in 2023, with more than 4890 of those calls being in the Town of Millinocket

Officers have arrested or summonsed over 515 individuals to date and conducted more than 2665 motor vehicle stops

Ofc Clayton and K-9 Derby are set to graduate the first phase of K-9 school and will return to patrol before leaving for school again in April. This will be a huge asset to the region, which again was funded by grant money.

Ofc Edson recently successfully became certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician. Ofc Edson will be able to provide inspections and assistance with installation of child safety seats to all community members at NO COST!

Officers were able to participate in multiple Trunk-or-Treat events in the region over Halloween. We can easily say these events were highly attended and successful as officers ran out of candy multiple times! Its great to see the community provide such fun and safe events for our children and we are lucky to be a part of them!

We are planning on another very busy Marathon weekend and will have multiple additional resources in town to help make a safe, enjoyable event!

The DEP required summer flushing of the town sewers has reached its conclusion. We did have a few situations of water being forced back into residences and this brings up the need for homeowners to install backflow valves to alleviate this risk. This is also a good time to remind everyone that wipes, cooking grease and other foreign objects cause problems in the sewer.

The crew has started the fall leaf pickup service. We are happy to pick up any bagged leaves that are left curbside. Please call the Public Works and leave the address where the leaves need to be picked up.

We are continuing to trim brush and limbs that are causing line of sight obstructions and growing into the rights-of-way around town. Currently we are focusing on limbs that risk damage to our plow trucks.

With winter fast approaching I want to remind everyone that our trucks need lots of room to maneuver and have many inherent blind spots. Please give us room to clear your streets. Please seethe image below.

The new Arial Lift truck is being built at the dealer. I have word that all parts are now in stock, and the truck should be delivered by the end of November.

Bryan Duprey, Public Works Director

Fire/EMS Department

Crews have been busy with a increasing number of Fire & EMS calls in the past month.

Chief Cote attended the Baxter Park Volunteer Recognition Banquet, and the department was presented with a certificate for there service to the park.

Please make sure to inspect all electric heaters prior to use.

If you have a need for emergency services, please call 911 to request assistance and not the non-emergency number, as crews are not always guaranteed to be in the building.

If you need smoke alarms, please reach out to the fire department and they will work with the American Red Cross to get you smoke alarms.

As winter is approaching fast, please make sure your walkways are shoveled, and addresses can be seen so emergency crews can assist you without any delays.

Fire Chief Jon Cote, EMA Director

A Veterans Day Celebration was held in the Stearns gymnasium on November 9, with a breakfast provided prior to the ceremony. It was well attended and greatly appreciated by our area veterans. Thank you to Ms. Terry Given for her work to make the program a success.

The Senior Class was in charge of creating a video for the Veterans Day ceremony. They asked students at both Granite and Stearns what Veterans Day means to them. It was a wonderful addition to the ceremony.

Our Mock Trial team had the opportunity to witness a federal court case in Bangor to help benefit them towards their competition on Saturday, November 18th. Good luck!

Our Food Service teams served 5,176 breakfasts, and 6074 lunches in the month of September.

Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Nick Cullen is very pleased to announce that Stearns High School Athletics has received a $200 grant from Penobscot Area Athletics Association. This grant is designed to provide athletic equipment for students in financial need.

Ms. Emma Alley’s and Ms. Tessa DeSilva’s 4th grade classes created a Wax Museum on November 1. They had a great time presenting to students, staff and parents.
