Assistance League of Hawaii's October meeting was a huge success with our own
Geri Johnson
showing everyone that by simply laughing, anyone can look and feel younger. Studies have shown it does add to a longer life and reinforces the adage "Laughter is the best medicine." An easy example is to greet others with "A L O H A, hahaha!" I think the group that won the laughter competition is planning to charter a plane for Hawaii's chapter to the 2019 conference in Las Vegas!
This month's Regular Meeting features an interesting speaker from the community. Cyber security expert
Loren Aquino
will suggest ways to protect your computer and other connected devices from being hacked. It is a very hot topic due to the many online sites and people that have their identities compromised. Read more about cyber security below (in the Hospitality section) and make a sincere effort to learn how to protect your computer.
In this month of Thanksgiving, I have a lot to be thankful for at Assistance League of Hawaii. Reflecting on all the many volunteers that have kept our chapter running so smoothly through the good and tough times, a big THANK YOU to you all, our dedicated members who believe in all work and

"Phishing Scams" is our Meeting Topic
Assistance League of Hawaii's regular meeting will be on
Wednesday, November 14, 2018
at the
Mid Pacific Country Club
in Lanikai on Oahu's windward side.
Joy Corbett
is our member host to the club. The meeting will begin at 10.30 AM.
We are pleased to have Loren Aquino, President and COO of HI Tech Hui, as our guest speaker. His topic will be "How to Identify Phishing Attempts and Scams". We are looking forward to hearing what advice and suggestions Loren can share with us regarding this important topic. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for members to ask specific questions they may have on this subject.
The lunch price is $25.00 per person, tax and tip included. Beverage station will be provided with Coffee, Iced Tea and Water.
We will be having a luncheon buffet that has proved popular in the past:

Curly Fries

Cookies will be provided, courtesy of our Hospitality Committee.
If you did not sign the advance RSVP during the October Regular Meeting, please RSVP
on or before November 4, 2018.
As a reminder, Hospitality Committee Section in Standing Rules of Assistance League of Hawaii requires that a member who must cancel their reservations should do so by our cancellation date (in this case no later than November 5, 2018) or be responsible for the cost of this event. A member may prearrange to give his/her reservation to another member who will attend in his/her place and must notify the Hospitality reservation hostess prior to the event.

Thinking BIG and Acting BOLD
Plan Now for the Assistance League Conference 2019 in Las Vegas.
In case you missed National Assistance League newsletter, planning is well underway for Assistance League Conference 2019 in Las Vegas, September 4-7, 2019.
The Early Bird registration of $550, begins on April 15, 2019 and will close on June 30, 2019. This fee includes:
Opening day reception on Wednesday, September 4. All conference sessions held on Thursday through Saturday, Sept 5-7. Breakfast on Thursday through Saturday, Sept 5-7 Lunch on Thursday-Friday, Sept 5-6
Accommodations at the MGM Grand will be less than $200 per night for a double room.
When planning also include the round-trip airfare to Las Vegas.

OWL on the Road
There were several presentations in October. Oahu schools are busy and members are working hard as some members are away.
Gerri
and Leilani went to Maui at the end of the month.
We have gotten a lot of praise from teachers and students. Honokaa School, on the Big Island of Hawaii, is organizing a penny drive to promote Operation Wildlife.

Fourth graders at Schofield Barracks, DKI School were so eagerly writing down their thoughts about what they just touched and felt! Students there asked us if we had any extinct biofacts. We don't.
The students are very focused on the OWL presentation and love the Touch and
Feel. They continue to have great questions about extinction, and when asked how
they can make a difference, are focused on clearing up trash, planting trees, keeping the environment clean.

Operation School Bell® (OSB) events were held at WalMart Keeaumoku Street and the Target store in Kapolei. At-risk families with school age children benefit from our OSB shopping events which provide them with new school apparel.

Kokua with Aloha Kala (KWAK) Results
Thanks to all who made donations at Foodland in September during our Kokua With Aloha Kala (KWAK) fundraiser. There was $3,323 in member donations, plus an additional $704 from Foodland and Western Union. Another $380 was sent directly to ALH. That brings our grand total for this fundraiser to $4,308.82. We all know that these funds will be used wisely for our programs. Mahalo nui!

Thanks to everyone who has stepped up to fill work vacancies at the shop. Thursday, Oct. 25 was a banner day with only 2 people working in the morning and three in the afternoon. When scheduling is difficult, it usually means no one is upstairs sorting and pricing and no new items get to the floor.
Margie Van Swearingen wrote: "Sales go up when merchandise goes down!" That should be our slogan for upstairs.
Tell your friends about our "Christmas Preview Sale" - so far 12 tickets have been sold but now that our email service is restored, all our customers will be informed.
The park next door remains closed; hopefully this will continue.
If you are at the shop at the end of the day, check the elevator to be sure that no full bins are left in there overnight.
Our "snowbirds" are slowly returning. November and December can be difficult for scheduling so please help out when you can. See our Thrift Shop Calendar below to see when you can help.

Margie Van Swearingen presented the President's Volunteer Service Award to Debbie Muirhead for more than 4,000 hour of service in Assistance League of Hawaii. Debbie is our Strategic Planning Chair this year. She was recognized at our October meeting.
