Spending The Holidaze With a Toddler

It is the best of times and the worst of times. There are the twinkling lights which captivate your toddler for an hour and the canceled flight which causes him to fuss for two. There is the ecstasy of meeting the cousins and the agony of staying up till midnight. It is so much fun to make holiday cookies, but your child did not eat any "real food " for three days.  Behind the joys and tears, are those "expectations" that everyone is happy all the time with everything. Here come the Holidaze!

Year End Appeal

ECPC is excited to announce that our annual campaign to support our efforts to nurture and educate vulnerable families and children will begin shortly.  We invite and encourage you to join us as we provide  high risk families with the chance to learn new skills and gain strength,  so that they can guide and care for  their children in ways that will help build strong  and productive adults.   Please consider helping ECPC in our critical work in the community.

Look for your notice of the annual campaign during the Holiday season as you think about the spirit of giving and caring for others.

Thank you in advance from all of us at ECPC and may you and your family have a happy Thanksgiving!

ECPC responds to Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health needs along the continuum of

Promotion, Prevention and Intervention.

On the Zero to Three web site they have the following explanation of early childhood mental health and of a continuum of supportive interventions.  ECPC services span the breadth of this continuum.

Early childhood mental health can be considered to be synonymous with healthy social and emotional development.

It also refers to the mental health difficulties and disorders experienced by very young children. We can think of the response to infant and early childhood mental health needs as existing along a continuum of promotion, prevention, and treatment services.

Promotion:

Promotion services encourage and support social-emotional wellness and good mental health.  Promotion services are universal; they reach out to all parents of very young children. Examples of promotion programs include social marketing efforts that encourages parents to play with their children, or parent telephone "warmlines" that encourage calls from those with questions about typical child behaviors and development.

Prevention:

Prevention programs reach out to families that are experiencing greater levels of stress that may increase their young children's risk of developing social-emotional or mental health problems.  These programs seek to prevent the development of early childhood mental health difficulties by providing needed support and information. Examples of prevention programs include home visiting for families with young children or self-help support groups for those who are concerned they could abuse or neglect their child.

Treatment:

Treatment programs are designed to alleviate the distress and suffering of a young child's mental health problem and support the return to healthy development and behavior.  Public and private mental health treatment programs and early intervention programs assess, diagnose and treat mental health and developmental disorders.
