Protecting Our Aging Trees

trees

Among Newport's signature features are the many exotic trees planted more than a century ago. But today many of these trees are declining and are in need of preservation.  Join Arboricultural Researcher Kelby Fite and other representatives of Bartlett Tree Experts at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 16, at Rosecliff as they discuss initiatives to preserve and protect our aging trees. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested, by calling (401) 847-1000 ext. 154.

Chateau-sur-Mer Restoration

Wins Rhody Award

Our six year exterior restoration of Chateau-sur-Mer, including a new roof, has earned a Rhody Award from Preserve Rhode Island and the state Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission. The award was presented by Governor Chafee at the State House earlier this month.

Rosecliff and Chateau Closing Soon

Rosecliff and Chateau-sur-Mer will both close for the season on Friday, November 18. That's also your last chance to see the exhibit of 70 years of wedding dresses at Rosecliff.

Christmas is Just Around the Corner

Can you believe it? Decorating is already underway at The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House, and will be ready for the start of Christmas at the Newport Mansions on November 19. Holiday Evenings, visits from Santa, a Newport Nutcracker, special shopping opportunities-there will be plenty of holiday activities coming up. Check our Christmas at the Newport Mansions web page for details and tickets.

But if you haven't already purchased tickets for our annual holiday dinner dance at The Breakers, we're afraid you're out of luck. This popular event is already sold out.

This Month's Highlight of the Collection

This skylight is made up of several panels designed by the artist John La Farge. It includes three panels of green and white opalescent glass accented with smaller, thicker pieces of glass called "jewels." Originally installed in the New York City residence of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1882, it was reworked by the artist Francis Lathrop from 1893 to 1895. Lathrop added the borders, which are in a twisted pattern known as "guilloche." In 1895, the skylight was installed over the grand staircase at The Breakers.
