From the SCLCOEDC receiving its 501(c)3 designation to the deployment of innumerable volunteer hours in pursuit of its initiatives, 2019 proved to be every bit as challenging as it was successful. We are proud of the work we engaged in with development partners this year and look forward to accomplishing even more in 2020!
Here are a few highlights:

Placemaking
activities kicked off early in 2019, with a meeting attended by over 65 people who contributed their suggestions for site/"node improvements. From there, focus carried through to a comprehensive report and enhancement implementation. Progress continues to be underway. Join Us!

A
Business Improvement District
was approved by the City Council of Hayward in June, a result of many hours and effort to bring it to fruition. The newly formed organization is off and running promoting Downtown Hayward!

Business Support
Several new businesses sprouted up in Sawyer County this year. Many established businesses relocated to more advantageous locations within their communities. We were able to help with plans and marketing. Not only fun for us, but in some cases, yummy!

Sawyer County Board of Supervisors and the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribal Governing Board continue their support of the SCLCOEDC - Thank You!

After meetings during 2019 with both entities, these boards voted to support our organization's work. We look forward to joining forces to move Sawyer County and Tribal economic development forward.

Workforce Training Program Coming to Sawyer County Jail in January
-- Excerpts from article written by Frank Zufall:
"Starting in January, the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC) Construction Foundations Mobile Lab will be offering classes in the jail."
"The
SCLCOEDC
secured a Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College Correction to Career grant for Sawyer County, along with a $5,000 personal grant to fund the mobile lab."
"Besides WITC and SCLCOEDC, other partners include the Sawyer County Board of Supervisors, the criminal justice coordinator, Sawyer County Sheriff's Office, Workforce Resource Inc., Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College, Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board and Northwest CEP."
This article covers in detail the initiative, sparked by the SCLCOEDC, to ebb the tide of local repeat offenders by providing current inmates an opportunity to gain employment skills and a pathway to a changed future.

Welcome Rob Susedik of H&R Block
to our Board of Directors

Rob Susedik's nomination to the SCLCOEDC Board of Directors was unanimously approved and he joined us in December.
We look forward to Rob bringing his financial expertise - as well as his dedication to community service to our organization. Rob is well-known locally for his volunteer contributions including with the Boy Scouts of America.

Board Member Spotlight
Jason Weaver
|
Volunteers aren't always retirees with tons of extra time on their hands. Case in point: Our Board Member Spotlight of the Week, Jason Weaver. This busy man (with a full-time job in the Grants Department for the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwa) is not only a volunteer member of our SCLCOEDC Board of Directors, he volunteers for several organizations serving his Tribal members. OH! And an additional shout out (HOOAH!!) to Jason for having served to defend our nation's freedom in the U.S. Army! Wow, does this guy ever slow down? We think not...
Jason Weaver is a citizen of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and has served as Secretary / Treasurer of the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Governing Board. Jason is an L.C.O. High School graduate and a U.S. Army Veteran. He earned an Associate of Science Degree from the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College, a Bachelor of Science with a major in Sustainable Business Management from the University of Wisconsin Superior, and a Master of Arts in Administration and Governance from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Jason sits on a special committee for the Wisconsin Legislative Council in Madison and volunteers as Vice Chair of the Native American Financial Services Association in Washington D.C. Jason also serves on the Lac Courte Oreilles K-12 School Board. Jason joined Don Semler to assist in the creation of the Lac Courte Oreilles/Sawyer County Economic Development Committee. Jason is a strong advocate for tourism and promoting the region, and felt that this committee could be useful in coordinating efforts. In his free time, Jason enjoys Wisconsin sports, outdoor activities, and spends as much time as he can on the area trails and lakes with his family.
