Nourishing Success and Growing in Gratitude

Child Legacy International (CLI) embraces the wisdom of the proverb, "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” Since its inception, CLI has strategically focused on training and employment initiatives that empower local communities. Our approach emphasizes providing a 'hand up, not just a handout,’ equipping people with the skills they need to thrive independently. Through these programs, we aim not only to improve immediate livelihoods, but also to cultivate future community leaders.

In Malawi, CLI partners with Moyo Goods to work a 500-acre farm where over 130 local Malawians are employed in planting, crop management, and harvesting. Utilizing advanced irrigation and permaculture techniques, this farm serves as a model of sustainable agriculture in the region.

Following the recent harvest season, we are now packing our maize into bags for storage. Despite adverse weather conditions this year, CLI successfully harvested over 250 bags of maize, each weighing 50 kilograms. This maize will be used for community support and to provide daily lunches for our employees, further demonstrating our commitment to their well-being.

Velepi Chenjala, one of our casual workers, shared, “I’m so happy to see the harvest of our labor. I feel proud for being one of the people who planted this Maize in December 2023.”

As an act of appreciation for our employees, CLI offers them subsidized meals every day, aiming to reduce the strain on their cost of living while also enhancing productivity within the organization. Kwaitana Shumba, a staff member, expressed gratitude, stating, “Many of us come to work without even having breakfast, and we appreciate CLI for providing us with subsidized lunch.” Kwaitana also extended appreciation to Child Legacy CEO, Jeff Rogers and CLI’s donors for their support in ensuring a steady maize supply through provision of seeds, fertilizer, and labor. This support enables us to sustainably provide lunch to our staff year-round.

Employee Spotlight

Olivata Harold has worked at CLI since 2021. At 66 years old, she plays a crucial role in tree grafting and nurturing seedlings in our greenhouse. Among the diverse tree seedlings in our shared greenhouse with Moyo, are Mangoes, M’bawa (Mahogany), Lukina, Guava, Sisal, Coffee, and Macadamia. Upon arrival, coffee and macadamia tree seedlings are temporarily housed in the greenhouse until they are ready for planting. Some would say that Olivata is too advanced in years for this position, but we deeply appreciate her remarkable dedication and hard work and we celebrate her strength! Reflecting on her journey, Olivata shared, “Since the death of my husband in 2005, I have been struggling for a living. Thanks to Child Legacy International for providing me with a job. I managed to buy 2 goats, chickens and I’m able to support my grandchildren in school and 2 orphans whom I live with after the death of my sister."
