Limoneira - Grocery Headquarters Retail Dietitians Summit
On October 22nd, Limoneira management took part in a virtual Take A Healthy Stand™ summit with Retail Dietitians from around the U.S.

Already top-of-mind with consumers, COVID19 has reinforced the need to make lifestyle changes to maintain or improve health.

Self-care is a vital part of overall health, including physical, mental, and emotional health. A new survey from Harris Poll-Samueli Integrative Health Programs found that many adults in the United States plan to be more mindful of their self-care habits.

80% of respondents said they will be more mindful about practicing regular self-care once the pandemic is over. The survey included more than 2000 respondents and was conducted in May 2020.

Nearly half of respondents (46%) said that they are struggling to find ways to maintain their overall health during the pandemic. Specifically, 30% reported a lack of energy, 29% reported difficulty sleeping, and another 29% said they are exercising less during the pandemic. Nearly half (47%) reported feeling socially isolated. Finally, 64% said they are more focused on their mental health now than ever before.

Despite these concerns, 44% said they wish they had more guidance and support for practicing self-care, which can include lifestyle changes, a healthy diet, regular exercise, stress management, and other behavioral changes.

This represents an opportunity for Grocery Retail Nutritionists to share their expertise.

Limoneira works with and supports the Retail Dietitian’s Business Alliance (RDBA) to provide objective and simple messaging and tools to assist in getting shoppers healthy.

In 2020, the retail environment and the role of the retail dietitian has significantly changed. It remains to be seen which of these changes will be temporary or long-term. During the recent RDBA Virtual Experience, RDBA Executive Director Annette Maggi, MS, RDN, LD, FAND addressed how dietitians can thrive in the current and post-pandemic retail environment.

  • 2020 as we all know has dramatically changed how we do things
  • Health and wellness high in consumers minds
  • Shifting priorities- Doing more with less
  • e-commerce exploding
  • Never Ending Competition
  • You are not what you do but why you do
  • Develop a Consulting Mindset and demonstrate how to add value
  • Build your personal brand within your retail environments
  • (marketing teams, e-commerce teams, merchandising teams)

We also shared background and details on Limoneira’s NATURE’S PHARMACY™ app with the audience. NP highlights 57 health concerns or desired outcomes which have been cross-tabulated with 74 fruits and vegetables that can be found in a typical grocery store’s produce department. These fruits and vegetables contain 12 essential vitamins and 11 essential minerals. Shoppers select a concern or outcome- the app generates foods in the produce aisle that can help them achieve their health goals.

Examples from Limoneira’s Nature’s Pharmacy™:

  • Bob has memory issues and wants to see if simple changes to his diet can help- He clicks Nature’s Pharmacy on his phone and see’s Alzheimer’s issues, and sees oranges, lemons and limes that are items that can help.

  • Jackie feels tired all the time and has a lack of energy. Her friends at the gym have suggested that she take Vitamin B1 (Thiamine). She would prefer not to take another supplement. A quick check of Nature’s Pharmacy shows her that Brussel Sprouts are one of the items that contain Vitamin B1. She’s got a great recipe for roasted garlic Brussel Sprouts that she’s been wanting to try.

  • Tiffany wishes she had a clearer complexion. She’s a believer in “you are what you eat”. She’s in the store and the Retail Nutritionist suggests checking Nature’s Pharmacy and sees that Vitamin’s A and B3 can help and picks up lemons, and peaches for a smoothie.

Limoneira Participates in the Global Citrus Congress
Citrus is one of the biggest produce categories, but it has faced increased competition from other fruits and vegetables in recent years. Since the onset of COVID19, however, demand has been booming. The GCP will demonstrate how suppliers can maximize this opportunity and build a more sustainable industry.

Fruitnet Media International and the World Citrus Organisation have joined forces to organize the first-ever Global Citrus Congress Live, a virtual event bringing together leading players from the global citrus industry to identify and develop strategies to meet growing global demand.

Global Citrus Congress Live presents the latest global production figures and track emerging consumer trends, identifying opportunities to sell more citrus in traditional and emerging markets.

Limoneira has been asked by Chris White, the Managing Editor of Fruit Net Media to participate by giving a Sustainability presentation on several sustainability initiatives. Limoneira with biodiversity projects, solar energy, battery storage, innovative water projects, green waste recycling, and leadership in farmworker housing is honored to have been selected for this important event.

Limoneira Participates in Asia Fruit Logistica
As with all things COVID, ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA ON will be a digital event format and it's much more than just a virtual trade show. It’s a sophisticated online platform that connects exhibitors with buyers and sellers in Asia. Limoneira sales people and management will be participating. As an exporter to many Asian Countries for over 7 decades, Asia is a very important part of the world for Limoneira. The majority of the global middle class is projected to come from Asia. As incomes rise, consumers move up from shopping in outdoor markets to grocery retailers. They also dine out more, and as educational levels rise, health becomes increasingly important. All good things for Limoneira.

Asia Fruit Logistica’s visitors will enjoy a technically advanced program to make new connections, to meet, to organize formal business meetings, to discuss deals, and to plan the season ahead.

ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA is working with its partners at FRUITNET MEDIA INTERNATIONAL to host a full program of online conferences, seminars, and workshops that take place around ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA ON. It includes ASIA FRUIT CONGRESS ON, an online format of Asia’s longest-running and most successful conference event for Asia’s fresh produce decision-makers.

Limoneira on Coffee with America
Just before the holidays kick off in full swing, Limoneira and Megan Roosevelt will be featured on Coffee with America. The show is available in 180 TV markets through the YouToo America network, on major cable providers like Comcast and Time Warner, and on local affiliates like WAGA-TV Fox 5 Atlanta.

Coffee With America features two experienced and talented hosts, Ebony Steele and Sasha Rionda. Steele is best known for her work on Fox TV's Dish Nation! and radio's The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. Rionda has hosted shows on both CNN International and CNN Espanol.

Steele is quite possibly one of the most prolific personalities in entertainment today. She has been named as one of Radio Facts' Top 30 Women in Media alongside Oprah, Wendy Williams and Soledad O'Brien. Sasha Rionda is perhaps most recognized for hosting "The Music Room" on CNN International, where she interviewed top recording artists like Britney Spears, Usher and Moby.

Coffee with America was the first major TV series for the new Atlanta Broadcast Studio, located near Vinings (Atlanta). It’s a state-of-the-art facility built specifically for live TV production and broadcasting.

The production team for "Coffee with America" will be led by Ben Garrett (Lifetime, CNBC). Garrett and the Atlanta Broadcast Studio team members have launched successful programming for Lifetime, CNBC, RLTV and Health Media Network, among others. Meredith Callan will lead brand integration for the new show; she held a similar position with Mojo Brands Daily Buzz and Emotional Mojo until their recent cancellation. Ashley Smith, formerly of The Weather Channel, is the Executive Producer.

Limoneira Lemon Misfits™ Help Address Food Waste Issues
Limoneira's Lemon Misfits™

Did you know that roughly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year (approximately 1.3 billion tons) gets lost or wasted?

Food losses and waste amount to roughly US$ 680 billion in industrialized countries and US$ 310 billion in developing countries.

The misfit label is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the lemons having a little scarring from wind in the orchards. We're playing on this fact by identifying them as orchard outcasts with great personalities. After all, we all know that beauty is only skin deep.
