Dear Mason School of Music Family,

We offer our heart-felt congratulations to our 60 Mason Music Graduates who were awarded BA, BM, MM, DMA, and PhD degrees! We are also thrilled to welcome our largest-ever incoming class of 115 new music students in Fall 2018 (contrasted with 74 new music students in Fall 2017) into our various music degree programs. We are excited by the phenomenal growth of our School of Music, made possible by our stellar music faculty and outstanding curriculum in music performance, music education, music technology, jazz studies, music composition, conducting, and pedagogy. We are also grateful to our dedicated  Friends of Music at Mason   who assist with needed scholarship support for our exceptional music students. 

We are very pleased to welcome three new full-time faculty members for the upcoming year:  Dr. Robert Gillam , Music Technology;  Dr. Kathleen Mulcahy , Director of Woodwinds; and  Dr. Elissa Alvarez , Voice.  

You are welcome to join us for upcoming concerts in June organized by Mason's Community Arts Academy and the  National Jazz Workshop . Please note that our School of Music Fall 2018 Concert Series begins on Sunday, September 23rd, 3 pm, with the  Grand Piano Celebration .  Also mark your calendar now for  Arts by George  on Saturday evening, September 29th!

Staff member Molly Baldovin received her master's degree in arts management and was the recipient of the Erin Gaffney Award for outstanding academic achievement.

Margie Woods graduated with her PhD in Music Education. Her dissertation research focused on multicultural choral music.
New Full Time Faculty
Dr. Robert Gillam,
Music Technology
Dr. Gillam is an active educator, having taught at several higher-education institutions across the United States. His primary areas of interest are in music technology, composition, sound design, commercial music and music for media. While teaching at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, Robert helped develop and implement an innovative sound design curriculum.
Dr. Kathleen Mulcahy,
Director of Woodwinds
Kathleen Mulcahy joined the George Mason University faculty as Adjunct Professor of Clarinet in 2012, and performs throughout the Washington, D.C. area as an orchestral and chamber musician. From 2014 – 2016 she served as clarinet and bass clarinet with the National Symphony Orchestra, and has held tenured positions with the Annapolis, Buffalo, and Grant Park Orchestras. She is principal clarinetist with the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, and appears regularly with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. 
Dr. Elissa Alvarez,
Voice
Noted by the Boston Globe for her “intensely lyrical” singing, soprano Elissa Alvarez is an equally enthusiastic interpreter of recital, concert, and operatic repertoire spanning early music to works of the twenty-first century. Recent engagements include appearances with the Handel and Haydn Society at Tanglewood, in Boston at Jordan and Symphony Halls, and in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Bernstein’s Mass with the Brandeis-Wellesley Orchestra and Choruses, and as guest artist for both Tufts University’s New at Noon new music series and Bucknell University’s Debussy Centenary Symposium.

Presentation at Classical Singer National Convention
