We are enjoying the start of a fantastic new 2018 spring semester with the return of our wonderful music students on January 22nd. We are happy to welcome a number of new students (including six international students) to our School of Music this semester.

We are thrilled to announce that
Dr. Jesse Guessford
has been chosen as the new Associate Director of Undergraduate Education at George Mason University. What a tremendous honor for Dr. Guessford! We are pleased that he will continue to oversee and guide our fabulous Music Technology program in the School of Music. We will be conducting a national search this spring semester for an additional full-time music technology faculty member to join us next fall.
Dr. Kathryn Hearden
, soprano, has announced her retirement, effective the end of the spring 2018 semester. Dr. Hearden has been a highly esteemed faculty member in voice for 24 years at Mason where she has also served as the Associate Director of Vocal Studies. She will be deeply missed by all of us. Be sure to mark your calendar for March 2nd at 8 pm when Dr. Hearden will be featured in our Faculty Artist Series. We will be conducting a national search this spring semester for a new full-time vocal faculty colleague for the upcoming fall semester.

Dr. Jesse Guessford
has been chosen as the new Associate Director of Undergraduate Education for George Mason University. He will be in charge of curriculum development and support around
Mason Impact
, Curriculum Impact Grants,
Office of Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research (OSCAR)
Development Grants, and the OSCAR Research course designations. Dr. Guessford will also co-chair the Faculty and Curricular Activities Committee for the Spring 2018 semester.
Dr. Guessford is extremely dedicated to his students and was recognized with the 2017 OSCAR Mentoring Excellence Award. He has experience with entreprenuership through the creation of the Mason Noise record label.

Dr. Kathryn Hearden to Retire in May

Soprano Kathryn Hearden completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music, where she was a winner of the Concerto Competition and the Performer’s Certificate. Among the last students of the renowned mezzo soprano, Jan DeGaetani, Hearden has also studied with Chlöe Owen, William Sharp, Masako Toribara and George Gibson.

Doing Musical Detective Work: Finding and Editing Source Material for a Jazz Repertory Concert

How do you put on a concert if you don't have any of the music? This presentation will explain the "detective work" of locating source material in the form of composer manuscripts, published sheet music, and recordings. Additional topics include preparing performance editions and tracking down correct composer and title information. Audio/video examples may include "You Don't Say," "Now, Ain't It?" and "Melba's Tune," all by Melba Liston.

Piano Alumna Composes for Olympics
|
|
Hyunji Kim (BM 2015 from Mason) was chosen as the composer and performer for a 2018 PyeongChang Olympics promotional video. Her original composition was chosen from a very competitive field of many entrants. Hyunji is currently completing her master's degree in piano pedagogy at Ewha Women's University in Seoul, South Korea. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance as a student of Dr. Linda Monson, where she was privileged to perform as a piano concerto soloist with the Mason Symphony Orchestra.

Vocal Alumni Recent Performances

|
Jose Sacin (BM 1997), baritone and artistic director of Opera NOVA, is currently concertizing throughout Spain. Melanie Campbell (BM 2006) is an emerging artist singing the role of Marian Anderson in outreach performances for Virginia Opera this month. At Opera NOVA’s recent Black History Month program, Elise Jenkins (MM 2016) and Dei Nikoi (MM 2015) were featured singers. All were students of Prof. Patricia Miller during their studies at Mason.

Students at the Midwest Clinic

Mason Music students attended the December Midwest Clinic in Chicago, the annual music conference offering music education workshops, clinics, concerts, and "unrivaled opportunities to network with the best and brightest."
