Northwood School Laker

Beware of Phone Scams

Phone scams are increasing in frequency, including in Northwood. Now someone can mask their own phone number and replace it with any other. This comes in handy for telemarketers wishing to get you to pick up the phone. I myself have been caught with this more than a few times even at the school. I have heard my phone ring, see that the caller is in one of the classrooms, and then have to hear someone introducing themselves as coming from JoeBob Incorporated and wanting to know if I need more mouse pads (no, I do not). This might seem like a slight inconvenience, but think about where it may go. Any person could use any number on caller ID and say they are whoever they want. Someone could use your great aunt’s number and try to disguise their voice and say they need money right away to some bank account number. Just like emails, be careful what information you provide over the phone, even if it seems legit.
