Northwood School Laker

April 21, 2023

From the Assistant Principal

Now that Spring is in full swing, we can start to look forward to longer days, warmer weather, and baseball and softball. Our spring teams are working hard to get ready for the upcoming season, and we are all looking forward to another season of Laker baseball and softball. As such, here are some fun softball and baseball facts.

  • Every baseball has 108 double hand-sewn red stitches.
  • Softball has been given a number of different names which include mushball, kitten ball, diamond ball, indoor baseball, pumpkin ball, cabbage ball, ladies baseball.
  • Mo’ne Davis  became the first female to win a Little League World Series baseball game.
  • The lifespan of a major league baseball is 5–7 pitches. During a typical game, approximately 70 balls are used.
  • Initially, softball was not played with a ball but with a boxing glove
  • The oldest baseball park still in use is Fenway Park, the home field of the Boston Red Sox, which debuted in 1912.
  • In the Olympics for softball of 1996 and 2000, the gold medal was won by the United States.
  • Before every game, umpires should remove the shine from the new baseballs by rubbing them with mud from a creek in Burlington County, New Jersey.

News from Sixth Grade

From the Technology Director

This past week I was able to accompany the sixth grade to Merrowvista. This is an educational camp up in the lakes region of New Hampshire. As a tech geek working in the technology field every day, one of the first things I noticed was the lack of accessible communication with my phone. This caused a great amount of stress, not having either cellular or wireless internet. I live with technology 24 hours a day. I even take a shower with my phone just inches away just in case I need to address something. Even though I missed not having information at my fingertips at a moment’s notice, I began to appreciate the environment I was in and by the end of the trip, I was only using my phone to keep track of the time. The lesson I learned (or maybe relearned), is that even though technology helps make life so much more convenient and at times easier, unplugging and letting the emails and texts pile up can actually be a good thing and help you appreciate all of the things around you. Just a thought. ~Mr. Robert
