Veterans Day Gratitude Moment!
According to historical documents, it was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 that an armistice to the fighting in World War I brought the war to a halt. Within the next year, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation that officially made that day Armistice Day. However, in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed Armistice Day to be renamed Veterans Day, and although details of the commemoration have changed over time, the purpose and role that the holiday plays in the lives of Americans remains the same. As most probably realize, the observance of Memorial Day, in May, typically honors those men and women who lose their lives while serving in the various military branches for the sake of our country. However, Veterans Day is the day that is set aside for honoring all those who have served in the past, or are presently serving today. So, as a self proclaimed history geek, long time social studies teacher, brother of a former United States Marine, son of an United States Air Force veteran, and a member of the Northwood School administration, I would like to take a moment to thank all of the brave men and women across all branches of our military for your dedication, sacrifice, and service. During this season of thanksgiving, it is important to honor you for all that you have done, are doing, and will continue to do for our country, citizens, and families! Your commitment is priceless, and our gratitude is immeasurable! Have a blessed day and wonderful weekend!
