Back to School Homework Tips for Families!

Dear Northwood Families,

Despite the scorching heat over these past few days, it is with great pleasure that I say welcome back to school to you all!  It is my hope that your time away has been enjoyable, renewing, adventurous, and filled with fun and relaxation.  As we settle into these first few weeks of school, both teachers and students are already hard at work building relationships, creating healthy learning routines, and establishing expectations for success.

Parents, and guardians, you can also help to make this a fantastic school year by making sure your children are in the classroom, focused on learning, and displaying a commitment to the work effort needed for growth.

As expected, this means that students will probably be assigned homework and/or assignments that can help enhance and reinforce their learning and growth.  No doubt, these homework expectations can sometimes create high stress experiences for children and families from time to time.  As such, I would encourage you to read this short article related to navigating these interactions with a positive and calm approach. I think you might find it helpful!

However, should you need some assistance, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher, counselor, or one of the administrators for help!  I am sure we can all agree that when our students succeed, we all succeed because of the contributions young minds can make to society and the communities in which they live.  We look forward to working with you all this coming school year!  ~Mr. Ling, Director of Curriculum

Open House

We will be holding an Open House on Monday, September 18, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Grades K-4 will visit classrooms from 5:00 to 6:00 and then are invited to come to the softball field for a cookout. Grades 5-8 will enjoy the cookout between 5:00 - 6:00 and then will visit classrooms between 6:00 and 7:00.

Kindergarten News

Students in KM have been learning all about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. It has been so much fun watching them eat milkweed before they make their chrysalis. The best part is setting them free and waving goodbye as they set out on their journey to Mexico.

End 68 Hours of Hunger Program

Northwood School is pleased to offer the End 68 Hours of Hunger program again this year. We have a great group of volunteers that fill backpacks each week for us. The backpacks are packed with food to help fill the gap between lunch on Friday and breakfast on Monday. Further information is available on the national website at http://end68hoursofhunger.org/.

Only school counselors know who is participating in the program. On Fridays, the counselors will put a bag in the participating students' cubbies or lockers, and it will come home with them that day. We then ask that you return the backpack on Monday, so it can be filled again by our volunteers for the next weekend.

If you would like to participate in this program, please email or call your child’s counselor. Any family can participate and it may be for a short term or the whole school year. We hope you will find this program helpful and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact either one of us at any time.

Thank you,

Lynda & Fay
