Welcome to biz-newz Northwest, a business newsletter for Washington, Alaska, and Northern Idaho small businesses, presented by SCORE Washington. The purpose of this newsletter is to provide news, tips, and inspiration to entrepreneurs, to inspire potential volunteers to consider joining SCORE in our mission, and to encourage partners in the small business ecosystem to join us in supporting entrepreneurs and encouraging the dream.

SCORE is a nationwide nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster vibrant small business communities through mentoring and education. We aim to give every person the support they need to thrive as a small business owner. SCORE’s 11,000+ mentors generously volunteer their time to provide free mentoring and education for entrepreneurs and small business owners so they can pursue their dreams.

A Client's Success

 Silver Slice Bakery

During the pandemic, owner Tanyia Smith created a gluten-free wood-fire pizza crust that is par-baked, frozen, and is sold to hotels and restaurants. She is currently working on pizza packaging and has a co-branding opportunity with Hormel Foods to expand into the frozen pizza industry. Like other businesses, post COVID, she made it through the storm and the future looks very bright, with a new product that tastes great, has a high demand and produces a new stream of revenue.

In Tanyia’s words, “I recommend SCORE to anyone who wants to start a business or is already in business. The experience and knowledge that the mentors have is not found in any books I read thus far. You’ll get the tools, insight, inspiration, knowledge, motivation and understanding to continue on your entrepreneurial journey.”

Corporate Transparency Act:

There is a new Federal Law, the Corporate Transparency Act (“CTA”), which became effective January 1, 2024. It is part of the Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020 and requires privately held companies to identify their beneficial owners to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (“FinCEN”) bureau of the United States Department of Treasury. This essentially affects all Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) and small corporations.

To learn more about this new requirement, register for this free one-hour webinar:

Seminar offered on January 10, 2024, at 1:00PM EST.

Mentor's Story

Jack Stiegler

I get a great deal of satisfaction in helping and encouraging clients by taking the mystery out of the process and simplifying the many steps involved.

I feel I receive as much as I give from mentoring. I meet very interesting clients, continue to learn personally, and have the opportunity to associate with some great SCORE volunteers."

I estimate that (over 25 years) I have served over 2000 clients and put in over 3000 hours.
