NORTHWAY WEEKLY UPDATE | Week of July 4

This Sunday: God with Us

Scripture: Deuteronomy 31:6-8; Hebrews 13:5

Join us On Campus or Online | Sunday, July 7, 2024

Why do we have to wait until Advent to say that God is here? This Sunday morning, our kids will celebrate Christmas in July to celebrate the joy of God’s presence in every season, not just winter. There are so many things we think will give us security but, in the end, they all fall short. But God does secure us and God is here right now. Let’s talk about it on Sunday.

A Note from the Pastor

Every July, my family gathers for our annual reunion. It's a time I hold sacred in the calendar. It's a time that involves fabulous food and fun. And - It's. A. Time!

When we spend time with our family, blood and/or chosen, we expand our understanding of the people we know and love. We hear different perspectives. We listen to different recollections. We uncover previously unknown stories. This is true of families of origin, and it is also true in our collective church family. When we spend time together we are able to engage as followers of Christ in ways which are relational, connectional, and transformational.

In addition to my family reunion this month, I will be attending a denominational reunion at the National Convocation in Greensboro, North Carolina. It has been 6 years since we’ve met in person. The National Convocation is similar to the General Assembly, only it is focused on Black Disciples. I thought I would share a little bit more of our Disciples' history to pique your curiosity about the many parts of the Disciples of Christ faith.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) embraces racial and cultural diversity in North America, including European Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Pacific Island/Asian Americans. These constituency groups exist to foster connection, representation, and support for specific communities within the broader church.

Let’s explore them:

National Convocation:

The National Convocation is a gathering of African American Disciples. It provides a space for worship, fellowship, and advocacy, addressing the unique needs and experiences of Black congregations and members.

Obra Hispana:

Obra Hispana serves Hispanic/Latino Disciples. It promotes leadership development, theological education, and community engagement among Spanish-speaking congregations and individuals.

North American Pacific/Asian Disciples:

NAPAD Asian American and Pacific Islander Disciples. It supports ministries, cultural exchange, and collaboration across diverse Asian and Pacific Island backgrounds.

Through these groups recognizing and celebrating diversity, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) strives to be an inclusive and supportive community for all. If you'd like to learn more about the Disciples early history you can visit https://disciples.org/our-identity/history-of-the-disciples/.

My prayer is that you cultivate curiosity about the wider story of our denominational family as we continue to share the love of Christ with those near and far, from our door steps to the ends of the earth. Who knows what we might learn about God's expansive love and power!

See you Sunday!
