Dear North Linn School Families,
I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the summer season. As we approach the beginning of a new school year, I want to take a moment to address an important aspect of our educational system: the summer break for our dedicated staff.
Teaching is a profession that demands a tremendous amount of energy, focus, and emotional investment. On an average day, a teacher makes 1500 educational decisions—ranging from lesson planning and classroom management to individualized student support and collaboration with colleagues. This is an average of 4 decisions per minute making it one of the professions that makes the most decisions in a day (next to air traffic controllers).
In a conference we attended this summer, the North Linn Lighthouse Team learned that K-12 workers have the highest burnout rate in the U.S. according to a 2023 Gallup poll. This alarming statistic underscores the immense pressure and challenges faced by our educators. Burnout not only affects teachers' well-being but also impacts their ability to provide the high-quality education that our students deserve.
The summer break is not merely a vacation; it is a vital period for teachers to rest, rejuvenate, and recharge. This time allows them to return to the classroom with renewed energy, creativity, and enthusiasm. A well-rested teacher can better engage with students, innovate in their teaching methods, and contribute positively to the school community.
We must recognize and support the need for our teachers to take this time for themselves. By doing so, we are investing in the overall quality of education and the long-term success of our students. Please spend time with your student looking through this issue of our newsletter to see how our staff spent their summer resting, rejuvenating, and recharging.
And don’t forget to thank your teacher’s this year!!
Warm regards,
Leisa Breitfelder
