February 2024

News for students, families & friends

From the Supervisor's Desk

It is hard to believe that it is already February! We are excited to kick off our Family Gatherings this month. We will have two topics of interest featured in our gatherings: an introduction to our social emotional curriculum and a general overview of changes at New Horizons.

Both gatherings will be held at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., with an in-person and virtual option. There is no reservation or RSVP required; however, if you would like to join virtually please email or call the office so we can send you an invitation with the virtual meeting link.

See the descriptions of the gatherings below. We hope to see you there.

Respectfully,

Riley Denison

Monday, Feb. 19 from 12-1 p.m. & 4-5 p.m.

New Horizons at Traverse Heights

933 Rose St., Traverse City

Please enter at the back of the school off of Kinross & Fern St.

This session will focus on what Social Emotional Learning is, the curriculum that is being used at New Horizons, and how the curriculum is being presented to the students. The presenters for this session will be the School Social Worker for New Horizons along with the Speech and Language Pathologist for Traverse Heights, Courtade Elementary School and Traverse City Central High School classrooms.

Changes at New Horizons

Tuesday, March 5 from 4-5 p.m. | Thursday, March 7 from 12-1 p.m.

New Horizons at Traverse Heights

933 Rose St., Traverse City

Please enter at the back of the school off of Kinross & Fern St.

This session will focus on the additions, changes and redistribution of pieces of our program. Have you wondered what Readtopia is? Do you know what CBI stands for and why it's a part of our program? We will answer these questions and more during our time together. There will be a general format for the presentation, but the majority of the discussion will be driven by questions that you have about the program.

Student Supported Soft Food Pantry

by Beth Bedore

EBedore@NorthwestEd.org

The sense of community and helping others is a major part of growing up and coming of age. This year, the upper elementary and middle school class is actively involved in running the New Horizons' soft food pantry. In the past, the pantry operated primarily on donations; however, this school year Ms. Beth’s class has been collecting and returning pop cans every Friday to support our pantry needs. Students return cans, inventory stock and, with assistance, go to the store to fulfill the shopping list purchases.

Between the fall and winter breaks, the pantry was able to provide over 40 boxes of groceries to New Horizons students and their families. If you are in the position to support the pantry through donations of pop cans, food or with a monetary donation, please reach out to Beth to coordinate contributions. We will start planning for spring break deliveries soon.

If your family would benefit from receiving a box, we are always ready to support you. Please reach out to your child's teacher, the main office, or hit the "Connect with Cherie" button below to let us know.

Hello!

This month our focus is on United We Smile, a new dental clinic in the area.

The United Way of Northwest Michigan, in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, is pleased to provide access to dental care for our community. They are a top-notch training facility, where local volunteer dentists work together with pre-doctoral dental interns to provide services for individuals who can’t find help anywhere else. They only serve children, pregnant women, veterans and those with developmental or cognitive disabilities.

SERVICES INCLUDE:

X-rays | Fillings | Cleanings | Extractions | Dentures & Partial Dentures | Crowns | Bridges | Sealants | Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) | Fluoride Treatments | Periodontal Therapy

United We Smile is proud to offer dental services for our community, often with little or no out-of-pocket expense.

With a commitment to improving oral health, United We Smile works hard to provide access to quality care while ensuring patient comfort. In addition, their community partners provide many in-house resources, so please let them know if you need help in other areas. They can connect you to parenting classes, support groups and even assistance for food or housing.

United We Smile cares for those who need a little extra time in the chair because—let’s face it—going to the dentist can be a little scary. Need extra time? No problem! Their staff works closely with you to ensure they are prepared for your visit. They can accommodate special requests such as sensory issues, mobility aids, past trauma or any other worries you may have – and they have two quiet rooms! It is important to note that they do not have IV sedation, but can provide Nitrous Oxide for patient comfort. They’ve customized their environment with you in mind, so give them a call and let them know how they can help.

Please contact them directly to see if they can accommodate your child’s needs.

Parents and caregivers are important people in the lives of every child. Just as you care for them, it is equally important for adults to care for themselves through positive lifestyle and self-care practices.

February is American Heart Month. You have the power to take action to protect yourself against heart disease. Small heart-healthy actions like adding more movement to our day or choosing healthy foods, can have a big impact on protecting our hearts.

Join us TOMORROW, Feb. 2, as we wear RED for the National Wear Red Day Event! Find this and other ways to be heart healthy all month long on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute website.

In an effort to keep all of our students healthy, we appreciate your cooperation in following the guidelines for attendance at school. Please keep your child home if he/she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea (should be symptom-free for 24 hours)
  • High fever (usually 100 degrees or more; should be free for 24 hours)
  • Sore throat that has lasted longer than 3 days
  • Persistent cough
  • Red eyes with drainage, itching or burning
  • Any undiagnosed rash
  • Head lice (may return after treatment)
  • Extreme fatigue and/or irritability even in the absence of the above symptoms

As a reminder, if your child is sent home because they are sick or displaying one of the above symptoms, they need to stay home the next school day. They may return to school once they have been symptom free for 24 hours, without the use of Tylenol or Motrin, which helps keep a fever down.

Thank you for your help in keeping other students and staff healthy!

"See" What We Can Do!

In January, we took a trip to the bowling alley! It was a great way to start the new year and have a whole lot of fun. Our class worked on taking turns by waiting patiently and cheering for their classmates! They were very good sports. We are looking forward to continuing bowling in the months to come to further develop these skills.

In addition, we’ve started weekly science classes and are working in our science journals. We made a prediction about what makes a rainbow have colors, worked with a flashlight and a prism to make our very own colorful rainbow, and we pointed to and named the colors we could see. We saw red, blue, yellow, orange, green and purple. We learned that white light is a mixture of all these colors.

Our core vocabulary focus word was “see.” It was perfect this month, we got to “see” new things at the bowling alley and “see” beautiful colors during our science experiments.

It was a great start to the new year and we look forward to the months to come as we "see" what our future scientists continue to discover!

SOAR with Signs

by Michele VanKleek

MVanKleek@NorthwestEd.org

Curious about more signs? There are several free resources available.

Signing Savvy will help you find almost any sign you can think of.

Rocky Mountain School for the Deaf is a great library of ASL stories that are fun to watch over and over again.

How do Children Learn Sign Languages? Check out this article to learn!

Sign of the Month: "MOM" & "DAD"

Many of our students in our center-based programs use multi-modal communication. Learning signs to support spoken or augmented communication can increase comprehension and communication. However, it is important to note that American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete language in and of itself. These signs are taken from ASL and are used as a visual to support spoken and augmented communication.

What's for Lunch?

North Ed partners with Traverse City Area Public School to provide breakfast and lunch for our students. You can find all the school menus linked below.

Attendance

Students are expected to be in school on a consistent basis; however, we know illness, appointments and therapies sometimes happen during the school day. If your child will not be in school, you must notify the school office or their teacher directly by 9:30 a.m. Please call 231.933.3560

If your child will be out of school for an extended period, please let your child's teacher know so we can determine if there is a need for continuing their education outside of school during this time.

Extracurricular Involvement

If you would like your child to participate in any school-run, parent-initiated, extracurricular activities (sports, choir, school dances, etc.), you must give notice to your student's teacher three weeks prior to the event start date. We must have time to assemble the IEP team to determine if any additional supports are needed for safe participation.

Parents: Sign Up for Text Alerts

Northwest Education Services uses text messaging to inform our school community of school closures and other emergencies. Click the link School Closings & Alerts to learn more about how we communicate and keep you informed.
