James Tilton, MD (1745-1822), physician, soldier, patriot, inventor, and MSD's first President (1789-1822) and founding father is one of the most important physicians not only to MSD, but to our nation's history. It is in Dr. Tilton's honor that MSD pays tribute to an outstanding physician member each year.
Tilton Award honorees are selected from the MSD membership for possessing the outstanding characteristics demonstrated by Dr. Tilton:
- leadership
- vision
- innovative and pioneering spirit
- focused on medical excellence and advancing the profession of medicine
- life-long commitment to service for the betterment of patients and our surrounding communities
- courage, tenacity, and perseverance
- highly principled
- recognized as both a statesperson and ambassador for the profession of medicine.
Past award recipients include: G. Dean MacEwen, MD; Stephen R. Permut, MD; Nicholas J. Petrelli MD; Garrett H.C. Colmorgen, MD; Ray A. Blackwell, MD; Richard W. Henderson, MD; and Nancy Fan, MD.

MSD is seeking nominations from medical professionals, as well as members of the community, to recognize an exceptional physician member.
