No Idea What You Want From Life, Love and the Rest? Join the (Don’t Know) Club.

Hi Carole Ann,

Well, what do you know? No really. I mean what do you know for sure?

Sometimes committing to an idea or making a choice can be about as hard as finding a lentil in a Texas rib shack. “I dunno” is a cop out, as you know, but it's hard to nail your colours to the mast when all you have is a rubber dinghy with a hole in it.

Not having the foggiest is a limbo land of nothingness; a comfort zone which will nosh away years of your life with indecision and ultimately regret.

We feel unsure, shaken, confused or even scared when confronted by decisions that can change our lives. Some people even agonise over sandwich fillings let alone whether they should freeze their eggs, marry someone who “twerks” to Cliff Richard or go for that promotion which would mean more money but zero life.

Perhaps waiting another year to have a baby is best when you’ve got more money; and, besides, the moon is the seventh house and you’ve only just discovered the joys of espresso martinis.

Who can decide? Will you decide when your partner leaves you? Are you waiting for an external prompt then you can absolve yourself from responsibility?

Sorry, but the dog ate my life, sort of thing?

Life decisions are what define the passengers from the pilots. Do you sit back and let life happen to you or do you drive your own destiny? I know which option I prefer. I don’t want to leave my chances to other people, the Met office or fear-based procrastination. Do you? Don't overthink it…

Sometimes you only get one chance. That’s it. The comet of opportunity flies past and you have to decide whether or not to grab its tail.

Things take a lot longer than you think to build, change and create. Often a tediously long time. There are no short cuts from A-Z. There's no instant gratification (apart from John Lewis' crockery department - come on it's not just me is it?) and almost no guarantees. Trust yourself more.

It’s entirely possible to miss the boat while excuses and avoidance appear, at the time, to be the life rafts you need but delay the inevitable.

There are a thousand distractions, a million ideas or possibilities to pursue but doing none of them is not an option. That is if you want to live a life that feels full and meaningful and one you can look back on with a smile of satisfaction.

If you can’t decide or you are stuck in analysis paralysis or simply don’t know your own mind (it’s OK it’s a lifetime gig) here are some coaching thoughts which might help you know what you don't know:

  • Be your word. Commit to something. Give it time and wholeheartedly embrace your choice
  • Respect punctuality. Your time is not more precious than other people’s. Showing up is 50% of the way to success
  • Reconnect with your glee. Find what makes you smile, what makes your heart leap and pursue a passion. It helps you know you even more
  • Saying “I don’t know” is never a good thing. It’s very “beige” thinking.  What do you know? What would help you know? What if deep down you did know? Go on – know and stand up for it
  • Avoid saying “I will try/I might/maybe” – instead say “I will” or “I choose to” or ta-dah! “I know!”
  • Getting comfortable with the unknown is one of life’s most important skills. Master this then risk becomes a thrill. The poet Keats called it “negative capability” and the stronger you are at it the happier and more confident you become
  • You win some and you … learn some. Failure’s not fatal. Regret is dismal, though
  • Dare to be positive and enthusiastic about what you love and quit worrying about what others think. That's none of your business.

I know this – people who value their dreams over their doubts, have a clear vision and who take steps towards it are heroes, champions and winners – regardless of the outcome.

Trust that the Universe conspires to make their dreams comes true, doors fly open, coincidence and synchronicity occurs and energy soars as they inspire others too.

So now you know.
