Embracing The Competition
|
 |
If I had a dollar for every time a photographer, a blog, an article, or even I myself have said how photographers and the photography business are in competition with the whole world and their cell phone cameras well ... I wouldn't need to be in business. It's true though, the photo business has taken a hit because of today's cell phones. Now you can even get lens attachments to the camera phone. There have been photographers who have even left the industry because of it. Not just because people feel they don't need to hire a photographer these days to document their special events or to take portraits, but because many people have come to accept the lower quality of a camera phone image as "good enough". Even with the filters, its not the same. However, this does not bother me all that much and here is why. Not many people want to have to round up all the different photos, from all the different people, from all the different camera phones. They don't want to leave it up to chance that the important shots are gotten. They don't want the hassle of having to edit, enhance and create a book of the event (we are talking about hundreds of images here). Most of all, they don't want to have to worry about taking photos because all they want to do is enjoy the festivities rather than play photographer. In addition, they are not going to work with the DJ to set up shots or roam around capturing the little nuances that they miss during their event. The bottom line is, people will prioritize the need for a professional photographer. Weddings and mile stone events will always demand quality photo documentation. Parents will always desire at least one professional portrait in a setting of their choosing that includes the entire family. The industry will survive and those who stick with it will survive too. One way I have embraced the camera phone competition is by photographing it. I think at this point I may even have enough images of people taking pictures of other people that I could create a photo series on the over the shoulder camera phone portraits. If you think of it, it is a pretty amazing phenomenon. It was only 15 years ago that the first camera phone hit the market. Now, instead of commenting about the camera phone, I purposefully look for the opportunity to photograph the act of someone taking the picture. I love seeing their compositions on the little screen. So I welcome the camera phone as it gives me a new subject to capture. And life and the photography business goes on. |

A Different Point Of View
|
I'm pretty sure we've all heard about Throwback Thursday (TBT) occurring on most any social media site we may visit. It's where the user shares a vintage photo to their account on, you guessed it, Thursday. Most of these shares show just how much the user (or time for that matter) has changed. So, I decided to look this crazy habit up to see where it started.
According to Sports Illustrated, a sneaker blog page called Nice Kicks started posting vintage basketball shoes and calling it Throwback Thursday. The idea caught on. However, it has become allot more than shoes. Now it seems everyone is posting some form of old school remembrance in homage to TBT.
It got me thinking about what used to be a huge hit when I was a kid. Does anyone else remember the Sears Christmas/Wish Book catalog? I do, and I remember the books being at least 2 inches thick with everything you could possibly want inside the pages. Oh, I know they still come out in some form, but they're nothing like they were back in the day.
And just to see how much time has changed, or advanced, look at the computer for sale in 1979. Worth noting is the fact that the computer can process up to 8K bits of information at once. It also comes with a 322-page programming book. Of course all those accessories are what make it work so it turns out what you were really buying was a very expensive toy. They can run just about the same price now but isn't it amazing that our computers have more capabilities than those NASA used to put men in space?
I think the Throwback Thursday success is because everyone has a special memory of time gone by. It doesn't matter the season of the year, it's just fun to remember, share and most likely, make fun of the past. But without those pictures and fond memories, how else are we likely to remember or pass them on to the next generation? And whose idea was it to save those catalogs in the first place? Ah, but I'm glad they did. It brings back fond memories of sitting for hours and wishing for roller skates, Barbie dolls and great clothes. Ok, in hindsight, maybe the clothes weren't so great but they are definitely funny!

Shooting Stars Composite Art Portraits
|
This is a new line of creative portraits that my studio offers!
I am so happy to be able to combine my fine art , graphic art and photography school training! I have been searching for a way to satisfy all 3 in my work and here it is! I am concentrating on sports themes at the moment but I am exploring other compositing as well. Imagine a poster style portrait of your young athlete! It's not like other sport photography and it's created on commission so there is no template. Of course, if you see a design I have already created that you like and want one just like it, I am happy to accommodate. Commissioned Composite Art Portraits start at $450 for a 16x20 custom design on Metallic Paper. (session included) I also print them on Metal. If you've never seen an image printed on either surface, let me tell you, it's unlike anything you've seen before. The colors are so rich and deep! This art piece will definitely become a focal point in your home.

This is an ongoing series I created to show my past and present photographic works. Some of the photography is from my own personal work and some is from my work with clients. I think that a true photographer doesn't put their camera aside until they have a job to use it on. They have to love it. It's more about the art of creating imagery rather than the business, as I believe the business follows once people see how much you love it. Photographers who love the art form must find ways to bring it out so they can hone their craft. We are after all, visual artists.

I am always adding new images.
