Investigation of the Safety and Outcome of Abdominoplasty Without General Anesthesia: A Scoping Review
Madeline Hubbard (C2026), Ted Zhou (C2025), Dr. Nasim Huq, Plastic Surgeon and McMaster faculty
Presented at the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons, McMaster Medical Student Research Day and Niagara Health Knowledge Institute Research Day. A manuscript of this project has been submitted to the, Plastic Surgery journal and is under review.
Abdominoplasty is a common aesthetic surgical procedure primarily performed under general anesthesia. There is increasing interest in performing abdominoplasties without general anesthesia because of potential lower complication rates and shorter post-operative recovery time. A total of 28 studies were included in this review since its inception in 2023. Overall, evidence demonstrates that performing abdominoplasty without general anesthesia is safe and feasible.
Madeline said working on this project gave her the opportunity to become confident in the process of completing a scoping review, which resulted in her leading her next project. She also said her exposure to abdominoplasty and anesthesia has been invaluable in her surgical placements.

Norman Education Research Day
Two NRC scholarly projects were presented at the Norman Education Research Day (NERD) held at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre, on June 5, 2024.
1) Asil El Galad and Hanna Van Dierdonck (C2026) presented their research on the, ‘Demand of Scholarly Activity in Canadian residency applications.’ Asil and Hanna along with four of their peers Alyssa Palmateer, Caleb Mathai, Nikesh Chander and Shenna Dunn reviewed the websites for residency programs in internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, anesthesia, general surgery and psychiatry at 17 medical schools across the country. Their findings, ‘reveals the vague language used in CaRMS program descriptions, which can pose challenges for applicants.’ Asil and Hanna's team were guided by Dr. Amanda Bell and Professor Larry Chambers. A manuscript is being drafted for wider dissemination of this study.
2) Saachi Bami (C2026 Hamilton campus) and Benjamin Buehner (NRC) presented a quality improvement project poster aiming to improve the clinical outcome of stroke and pre-stroke patients by reducing the door-to-needle time. Door-to-Needle is a multi-divisional initiative led by Dr. Danielle de Sa Boasquevusque and her team of senior nurse practitioners and nurse educators in collaboration with the division of Radiology at the Greater Niagara General Hospital. Ariel Foo (C2024) a NRC graduate, was among the pioneers of this project who closely worked with Dr. de Sa Boasquevusque’s team. Ben and Saachi joined the project in 2023 to learn about the treatment of stroke and pre-stroke patients and assist with data analysis and the continuing PDSA cycles.
