Passport Services Offered at Moon Library

Did you know Moon Library is a U.S. State Department authorized Passport Acceptance Facility? ESF’s certified passport agents can distribute forms, accept completed paperwork, review required documentation, and forward applications to the U.S. regional passport agency in Philadelphia.

Student Conference I Abstract Deadline Extended

The Graduate Student Association and the Mighty Oak Student Assembly are seeking abstracts for the CNY Conference on Environmental Science and Studies. The deadline has been extended to Monday, Feb. 19.


This free conference is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Research students may submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations, sessions, or workshops.

Call for Abstracts I STRATUS Conference

The deadline to submit an abstract to present at the 2024 IEEE STRATUS Conference has been extended to Feb. 19.  


The STRATUS Conference will be held May 20-22 at ESF and brings together academics, industry professionals, government, and other domain specialists utilizing Unmanned Aerial Systems/Vehicles (UAS/UAV), commonly referred to as drones, for imaging and remote sensing applications. 


STRATUS 2024 puts the focus on hazards, environmental mapping, monitoring, and forecasting.

New Paper Published on Land Snails 

Dr. Morgan Bullis published Deep genetic divergence over small geographic scales in cryptic allospecies of the threatened Semperdon land snails of Belau (Republic of Palau, Oceania) (Stylommatophora: Charopidae) in BioOne with graduate adviser Dr. Rebecca Rundell in the Department of Environmental Biology.

Editorial on Indigenous Science Published in Science

Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer and Dr. Kyle Artelle published “Time to support Indigenous science” in the journal Science. The editorial celebrates the international NSF-funded Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science of which Dr. Kimmerer and the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment are a part. 

Service of Commemoration Honors Those Lost in ’23

Names for Syracuse University’s Service of Commemoration should be submitted to Hendricks Chapel at chapel@syr.edu by Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024. The annual service honors ESF and SU students, faculty, staff, retirees, trustees, and honorary degree recipients who died between Jan. 1, 2023, and the present. 


The Service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Hendricks Chapel. The names of those we have lost will be read and candles be lit collectively in their memory. The service will include prayer, spoken remarks, and music.

CNPE Lecture: Subsistence Hunting in Alaska

Roy Ashenfelter, an Alaska Native Iñupiaq knowledge holder and subsistence hunter and fisher from the Village of White Mountain, Alaska, will present the lecture Iñupiat Lifeways: Subsistence Hunting in Alaska.

Ashenfelter has dedicated his career to advocating for subsistence rights and bringing traditional knowledge to state and federal fish and game management issues. He is currently the chairman of the Bering Straits Native Corporation, president of White Mountain Native Corporation, and serves on the Inuit Circumpolar Council.


The Center for Native Peoples and the Environment-sponsored lecture is open to the ESF community. Contact Tusha Yakovleva with questions.
