Sandy Springs Fire Department Earns Top Rating | | |

The City is proud to announce that it has received a Public Protection Classification (PPC) of 1 from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). This is the highest rating possible and signifies Sandy Springs has exemplary fire protection capabilities. The ISO analyzes the relevant data and assigns a PPC grade – a number from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents the highest level of fire protection services. The rating will take effect on June 1, 2024.

The City is seeking input to improve the transportation conditions in the Powers Ferry area for all modes of travel, including drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders. Your survey response will help inform recommendations that are included in the final study report. The survey is open until March 7.

Dino Egg Hunt for People with Disabilities

Join us for our fourth annual Dinosaur-themed egg hunt designed to create an opportunity for children with disabilities to have an inclusive experience with their families. There will be multiple sessions beginning at 11 a.m. Each timeslot includes time to go back to prehistoric times with an educational fossil dig and dino play yard! We also have an assortment of dinosaur statues in our dino play yard ranging from several of our 2-foot baby dinos, to "Flower" our 8-foot long dino. participant get to have a meet and greet with a “real life" t-rex named Bleu!Spots are limited to accommodate children that prefer their personal space.

Sandy Springs Conservancy Trail Blazers Walk | | |

Mark your calendar for the Sandy Springs Conservancy’s first Trail Blazers guided walk of 2024 on Saturday, March 9, at 8:30 a.m. at Chastain Park. The walk will be led by Brian Barnes, Director of Operations and Volunteer Programs, Chastain Park Conservancy. The walk will cover approximately 1.5 miles on the north end of the park. Explore the new nature trails, the pond, renovated pavilions, playground, art center and learn about the history of the park. It's Time to Sweep the Hooch! | | |

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) is hosting its 14th annual Sweep the Hooch river cleanup on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This watershed-wide day of service brings together more than 1,500 volunteers at dozens of parks, tributaries, and access points along the Chattahoochee River to clean up litter. Volunteers can sign up for a cleanup site near them. Participation is free, but individual registration is required. Learn more and register here. | |

Mount Vernon Highway and Johnson Ferry Intersection Improvements Underway | | |

Work for the Johnson Ferry/Mt Vernon Improvements project began late February. This TSPLOST-funded improvement project will improve vehicular and pedestrian mobility and reduce congestion by alleviating the bottleneck conditions for east-west traffic on Johnson Ferry Road and Mount Vernon Highway and north-south traffic on Roswell Road. Abernathy Arts Center
Demolition has begun to replace a building at the Abernathy Arts Center. The City is going to construct a temporary facility that is scheduled to open in 2024. This new facility will add art programming spaces to the existing site.

Eco-Steward Program
The City's Environmental Stewardship Program is designed for local residents eager to engage deeply with our many greenspaces and distinctive urban forest. The program comprises twelve sessions per year, each hosted in different greenspaces. All learning activities occur outdoors and will begin this month through June, resuming in August and finish February 2025.

Little Medical School Showcase
Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at Hammond Park Activity Building

In this one-hour hands-on class, children will learn all about the instruments that doctors use during exams. They will be able to practice using real blood pressure cuffs and reflex hammers. Kids will learn how to use a stethoscope to listen to their heartbeat and breathing. They will plan what tools they would like to have in their future doctor's office clinic! Fee $25.

Wilderness Medicine Spring Break Camp

Camp participants will role-play emergency situations in the wild and learn how to prepare for natural disasters. These future emergency medics will learn about snake bites, hypothermia, tourniquets, poisonous plants, edible plants, distress signals, forest fires, tornadoes, mosquito bites, and more! Camp will run from 9 a.m. - noon and designed for ages K-5 grade. Fee $310.

Walk along the paths to discover the rookery found at Morgan Falls Overlook. Watch Great Blue Herons hard at work building their nests in the tree tops, look for juvenile Red-shouldered Hawks practicing their flying skills and American Robin busy singing their songs. We will explore the wide variety of nests that our backyard birds build and what you can do to invite them into your own backyard. | | |

After School Soccer is a coed soccer program for children from Pre-K to 5th grade. Locations include Dunwoody Springs, Lake Forest, Spalding Drive, Ison Springs, and High Point Elementary schools. The season literally kicks off with practices (drills consisting of dribbling, passing, shooting, etc.), children will be placed on teams, given a team t-shirt, and begin playing against each other on-site, after school.

Pruning is an essential element to ensuring the health and beauty of all trees and bushes, but the when, how and where are daunting for most of us. David Norton, City of Sandy Springs Landscape Manager, will tackle all of these issues and more in this interactive workshop. Together with Willie Park, the City of Sandy Springs Arborist, David will address when to prune, how to prune, which tools are best and how to use them effectively. After this workshop, we'll be ready to tackle pruning in our own yards and watch our plants flourish!

Join Laura Markson, a backyard naturalist from the nonprofit, Nurture Native Nature as she explores basic ways to heal our yards' ecosystems. Laura will share stories of the daily joy and wonder of experiencing nature in her own re-wilded yard. She will how us how the introduction of native plants and water sources encourage biodiversity. Wherever you are in your journey of creating a welcoming place for wildlife, Laura will inspire you to make a least one change in your own yard! The event will include resources to get you started.

Kids Paint Like Bob Ross!
Now kids (ages 8-12) can also join in on the Bob Ross painting fun! The Bob Ross company recently introduced a kid-friendly line of acrylic paints and smaller paint brushes for smaller hands. So now kids too can paint happy trees and majestic mountains using the Bob Ross techniques. Saturday, March 9 at 10 a.m. at Hammond Park.
