Art Tip
Did you recently receive a fine arts degree, but consider the whole "starving artist" scenario less than appealing? Fortunately for you, fine art graduates can branch out into a variety of career paths, including fields such as teaching, advertising, art direction, fashion design, interior design, storyboard Illustration, and art therapy. Consider this: it was an artist who designed the logo on your favorite brand of clothes; it was also an artist who designed your most recent tattoo! In fact, the demand for experienced tattoo artists is quite high. Depending upon your specific area of interest, you may need to pursue postgraduate study. For example, if you are interested in teaching art or art history at the university level, you will likely need to get a master's degree (a doctorate for art historians!) in order to meet job qualifications. You will also need an advanced degree to work as a curator in a museum setting. Courses at this level of education are more complex, advanced and rigorous, requiring the ability to engage in critical thinking and analysis. If you are interested in teaching art at the elementary, middle or high school level, you will need to become certified to teach.
Are you passionate about making your living as a freelance studio artist? If so, you should concentrate on your portfolio: a body of work that represents your technical skill and creative talent. Be sure that you can defend your work if questioned about it, which essentially means that you can explain your subject matter and influences behind it, as well as your use of materials. Being a successful studio artist requires an ability to be organized, self-motivated, and confident. There are several additional options to consider if you're positive that being a self-employed artist is your goal: artist residencies, gallery representation and commissions are opportunities you should investigate. Above all, try not to get discouraged during your career building process. Remember: it takes time to establish yourself as a reputable artist. Your artistic ability and college degree would be considered an asset for any job that requires aesthetics such as marketing, graphic design, or even arts administration at your local community arts center. As with any college degree, your education is valuable and will have ideally provided you with broadened knowledge that will benefit you in whatever path you choose in life.

Priscilla Hauser, MDA
|
Priscilla Hauser, MDA, is a dynamic and amiable painter, instructor and key influence in the creation of the decorative painting industry. Her book, For Whom the Brush Tolls Vol. I, served as the catalyst for expanding the industry.
Decorative painting is a diverse art form, utilizing a variety of techniques and media to decorate functional and non-functional surfaces. Tole painting, historically used to describe decorative painting on tin surfaces, was in its early days confined to only tin; however, Priscilla educated artists about painting on surfaces such as glass, wood, or even canvas. Thereafter, an industry was born.
Priscilla's journey as an artist spans more than forty years, sparked by an appreciation of a beautifully painted camel-back trunk she fell in love with as an adolescent. As an adult, Priscilla took a six-week course in tole painting at her local YMCA. Afterward, she began painting and honing her style from her garage studio, which led to sales of her artwork and classes.
The demand for Priscilla's classes built up. Eventually, her class sizes outgrew her garage studio space, resulting in the opening of Priscilla's Little Red Tole House in 1964. Priscilla, a high-energy, innovative and enterprising woman, also began to create instructional art books. Dimensional Glass Painting, written in 1969, was the first of more than 250 books she's authored.
Envisioning an organization for teachers of tole painting, Priscilla--future founder of the Society of Decorative Painters--began a start-up fund to realize her dream. Interested painters, many of them her students, contributed to the fund. In 1972, Priscilla gathered 22 artists together at the Camelot Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma to form an organization for decorative painters. Influential, well known artists including Mary Jo Leisure and Peggy Hobbs were in attendance. This historically significant meeting is considered the birth of The National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters, now known as the Society of Decorative Painters (SDP). The organization's mission is to stimulate worldwide interest in and appreciation for decorative painting, to recognize diversity of and excellence in the art form, and to serve as the resource center for all aspects of decorative painting.
Priscilla Hauser is truly a living legend. Her contributions to the growth of the decorative painting industry are unparallelled. Passionate and confident in her belief that she can teach anyone how to paint, Priscilla has appeared in television series, authored instructional art books and shared her knowledge and love of painting with burgeoning artists throughout the world. Her motivating force
is the vision that anyone, anywhere may discover their love and enjoyment of painting. Eventually, Priscilla sold her business to Martin F. Weber Co. in order to spend more time with her family. Today, she enjoys painting with Permalba and wOil.
