Funding from this plate has impacted 98,528 students in 2016 with lessons, materials, volunteers and teacher training. Annually up to $60K is distributed in grants to schools, FFA, 4-H and other Non-profit programs for Ag education initiatives by the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Council.

Read ME Agriculture - March 2018
Applesauce Day
Authored by Lisa Amstatz and illustrated by Talitha Shipman. Each classroom will receive a copy of the book, along with lesson ideas and information on Maine Agriculture given by a volunteer reader from the area.
All Maine classrooms in grades PreK-4 and volunteers from agriculture are invited to participate. There is no limit to the amount of presentations you schedule or materials you request. You may sign up both teachers and volunteers OR you may submit just teachers or just volunteers and MAITC will provide the missing component. All forms must be returned to the MAITC office by January 1, 2017 to ensure that all volunteers and classrooms receive the books and materials. SIGN UP TODAY!

Schools across the country will compete for a $10,000 grant to bring a healthy snacking program to their campus-and we encourage you to
nominate a school in your community! Together, USApple, SNA and NASDA are on a mission to get people talking about snacking in school.

Middle School Grant Opportunity
The Natural Resources Council of Maine is currently accepting applications for their
Engaging Maine Middle School Students in Protecting the Nature of Maine
program. They are offering another round of
$500 grants to middle school (6th, 7th, or 8th grades) teachers and clubs in Maine
. The grants are available for projects that educate students about the value of Maine's environment and engage them in the effort of protecting it. For more information. Deadline: November 30th.

Lessons:
- Fruits of Our Labor. Grades: K-2. Students will discover how fresh fruits can be dried and preserved by participating in an activity where they make raisins by drying grapes.
- A Rafter of Turkeys. Grades: 3-5. Students will learn about the domestication and life cycle of the turkey, recognize how turkeys are raised on farms, and identify turkey products.
- Three Sisters Garden. Grades: 3-5. Students will investigate the "three sisters" crops (corn, beans, and squash) and explore the benefit to planting these crops together. Students will also learn about Native American Legends and plant growth.
- The Geography of Thanksgiving Dinner. Grades 6-8. In this lesson students will identify common Thanksgiving foods and their farm source, determine if those foods can be produced locally, and locate the common origins of their Thanksgiving day dinner.
- Feeding the Digital World: From Farm to Fork. Grades 9-12. Using an interest-based approach in teams, students will create a video using a smart phone or tablet application to educate consumers about where their food comes from.
