Chapter Newsletter - May 1, 2024 | |
|
Hello Members,
Happy May 2024! First and foremost, let's keep our fingers crossed for cooperative weather as we gear up for some fantastic rounds on the green. Let the fun begin!
MENTORS: NEW this year! Any member that is interested in a mentor, please reach out. We have several volunteers to help you. Please email me at maryfaggiano11@gmail.com.
RDGA: Thank you RDGA Rules officials Dan Overbeck & Paul Turner – RULES of GOLF SEMINAR was well attended and a success. Our host was WEBSTER GOLF CLUB – Thank you Debby Murphy for allowing us to hold this seminar at no cost!
This year, we've got some special focuses and arrangements in place
to make our golfing experience even more enjoyable:
WEEKDAY PLAY on Thursdays: We're continuing Thursdays for Weekday Play, where we'll have the pleasure of including rounds at our Chapter Sponsors' golf courses. A big thank you goes out to Joyce Spears and Nancy Booth for their efforts and dedication in making this happen. Your hard work is truly appreciated!
WEEKEND PLAY: On weekends, we'll be alternating between Saturdays and Sundays (pending availability), continuing our tradition of inclusive golfing experiences that also involve our valued Sponsors. I extend my thanks to Colleen O’Mara for her continued dedication and hard work in ensuring our weekend rounds are nothing short of spectacular.
NINE-HOLE WEEKEND PLAY: I'm excited to introduce a new opportunity for those who prefer a shorter game or are unable to commit to a full 18 holes. Esta Richter will be the Coordinator of Nine-hole Weekend Play, providing more flexibility and options for our members. With these arrangements in place, I'm confident that this golf season will be one to remember. Let's tee off with enthusiasm and camaraderie, making every moment on the course a memorable one.
TOWN MEETING INVITATION
As part of our ongoing efforts to foster transparency and engagement within our Chapter community, I am excited to announce plans for a "Get to Know the Chapter Board" town meeting.
The purpose of this meeting is to provide all members with a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities of our Chapter board. We want to ensure that everyone is on the same page and has a clear understanding of how things operate within our organization.
If you are interested in attending and would like to participate, please email me at president.lpgaamateursroc@gmail.com with any questions or topics you would like to see addressed during the meeting.
Once we have received enough interest, with a minimum of 20 participants, we will move forward with formal plans. I aim to announce the meeting place, day, and time no later than May 10th.
Your active participation in this initiative is crucial to its success. Your questions and feedback will guide the discussion and help us tailor the meeting to meet the needs of our members.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our Chapter. I look forward to seeing you at the town meeting and engaging in meaningful dialogue about the future of our organization.
This month’s Quote:
“Sometimes being with friends is all the therapy you need.”
Best regards,
Mary

Rules of Golf Seminar
We had 23 members get a "refresher course" on the Rules of Golf at our Chapter Seminar in April. Presenters Paul Turner and Dan Overbeck, both USGA & RDGA Rules Officials, talked about those golf situations that come up nearly every time you're on the golf course and you need to know what the rule is in order to continue your play. We appreciate that Paul & Dan take time from their schedules to help out our Chapter. We always learn something new no matter how often we hear about the rules.
| | |
|
Handicap Seminar
Our Handicap Committee presented at our seminar in April with 38 members in attendance. The committee updated us on the newest handicap changes. They explained why we may want to have a Handicap Index and how to maintain it. We learned much about Handicap Index through a quiz and then the explanations of the answers. The committee made sure we learned about the new changes with handicapping that took effect in January 2024.
Thank you to the Handicap Committee:
Wendy Bolton, Pam Sawdey, Sheree Usiatynski, Sue Penepent, Terri Drawe & Nancy Schlinger

New Member Orientation
We are so pleased to be able to say that since October 2023 our Chapter has gained 49 new members. These ladies need to know how our Chapter functions and what opportunities we can offer them so we hold a New Member Orientation in April. This was done under the guidance of Kathryn Douglas, Member Services Director. She walked the group through a presentation from National that told of the many benefits of being an LPGA Amateurs member. Colleen O'Mara & Joyce Spears shared how Thursday and Weekend Play Days operate & how to register for them. Golf Genius is the software we use for the management of our golf events and leagues. Anne Levitt is our major Golf Genius Coordinator and she walked us through this site, showing the group how to register and pay for events. We are so thankful for these new members.

Linda Opalisky brings over 30 years of professional teaching experience to Webster Golf Club. Through the years, Linda played on the Futures mini tour, taught in golf schools in Florida and New York and has attended numerous PGA and LPGA seminars thus keeping abreast of innovations on the instructional side of the game. She has created programs to promote her personal philosophy that golf is a game for a lifetime and should be fun to both learn and play. As a result of her success and dedication, she has been selected to the PGA President’s Council for Growing the Game through Player Development Programs every year beginning in 2004 to the present.
Linda emphasizes alignment, routines, and the short game because those parts of the game don’t know or care if you are young or old, strong or weak, male or female. All are crucial to lowering your score. Understanding the four basic positions of the follow‐ thru is important too, because when standing still anyone can be as good as a tour player. Linda often uses ‘on course’ instruction because just hitting balls is not at all like playing the game.
