June Is:
Audiobook Appreciation Month
Audiobooks can be incredibly helpful for individuals with learning disabilities, including dyslexia. They provide an alternative way to access information and enjoy literature. Here are some tips for choosing audiobooks and a list of inspiring audiobooks that may resonate with people with dyslexia.
Picking the Best Audiobooks
Start Easy: If you’re new to audiobooks, begin with something short and easy. Consider starting with a children’s audiobook, which is easier to comprehend and track.
Choose the Right Narrator: Opt for a narrator with a calm voice that helps you understand the content easily. Listen to a sample before committing to the full book.
Genre Matters: Select a genre that interests you. Young adult books or mysteries and thrillers written in a straightforward style can be great choices.
Experiment with Speed: Adjust the audiobook speed to find what works best for you.
Create a Dedicated Reading Area: Having a quiet space dedicated to listening can enhance focus and reading habits.
|
|
Inspiring Audiobooks for Individuals with Dyslexia:
“Hair Love” This audiobook explores the relationship between Zuri and her father. It’s heartwarming and beautifully narrated.
“The Good Stuff: Practical Positive Supports for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Mental Illness” While not specifically an audiobook, this book provides valuable insights and practical advice for individuals with IDD and mental illness.
“Literacy: The Key to Inclusion for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities” Although not an audiobook, this resource emphasizes the importance of literacy for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Remember, audiobooks can help improve reading skills, comprehension, and overall quality of life for people with learning disabilities. They allow everyone to access the joy of storytelling, regardless of reading challenges.
