June 2024

Something from the commissioner...

The weather has finally warmed up and the sun shone on the archery team during the archery taster event. Thank you to the units who brought their girls and the archery team for making the day a success.

In June we are looking forward to a fun filled day at Stanwick Lakes followed by a relaxing evening just for adults. The brownies will be having a go at various paddle sports and units will be enjoying a guiding screening of Inside Out 2 at various cinemas across the county.

Don’t forget to have a go at our county challenge badge ‘Guiding in Motion’ any funds raised from the badge sales will support our county properties, details are in the newsletter and on our county website.

There is also an opportunity to raise the profile of guiding during the Big Help Out, if you’ve planned an event and will be welcoming visitors to your units or districts I hope the events are a success, and by sharing your passion for Girlguiding more volunteers choose to join and enjoy the fun and adventures on offer.

Welcome Susan Cole

County President

Give us a brief overview of your journey in Guiding?

I started as a Brownie aged 7 - almost 60 years ago! Majority of my Guiding has been in MID division as a Guide, Ranger, Leader, Commissioner. I became a Queens Guide, did Gold DofE in Guiding & Venture Scouts. Performed in the Northamptonshire Gang Show for 10 years. Represented the U.K. at a Juliet Lowe seminar at Sangam, India in 1980. Been a Rainbow, Brownie , Guide and Ranger Leader taking girls on holidays, camps and overseas. Became Northamptonshire's County Commissioner in 1995-2000. Worked as a member of Girlguiding staff at CHQ in London from 2001- 2016- Programme manager and Head of Membership Support Services. Responsible for Girlguiding U.K. Centenary celebrations and development of Go and Subscriptions.

Held County appointments and I have been a VP in Northamptonshire i 2002. Currently a committee member for Jubilee campsite.

What is your favourite thing you have done, or your greatest achievement in Guiding?

Favourite thing in Guiding is being part of such an engaging, inclusive movement. Greatest achievement is being asked to become Northamptonshire's President.

What do you enjoy outside Guiding?

I enjoy gardening, reading and being part of my village drama group.

What is your favourite animal and why?

A West Highland Terrier dog - I was given one by Girlguiding Northamptonshire when I finished as County Commissioner. He was called Mac - after MacQueen House and attended many Guiding events and camps with me. Sadly he passed away in 2020 and I miss him still.

What are you looking forward to most about your new role?

Joining in with all the many activities, events and adventures with members of Girlguiding Northamptonshire.

NEW NIGHTS AWAY BADGES

We're pleased to introduce two new stages of the county nights away badges which can be given after 3 and 7 nights away with Girlguiding.

These badges are the first of our newly designed range with updated branding. We are also releasing the new 15 nights away badge at this stage. Two of the redesigns feature our very own MacQueen House and Jubilee campsite to make them extra special! The other numbers will be updated as remaining stock is sold. Record cards can be found on the county website and badges cost £1.

Girlguiding Northamptonshire are celebrating the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics with a brand new challenge badge –

Girlguiding in motion.

The Olympic and Paralympic values of Excellence, Respect, Friendship and Courage, Determination, Inspiration, Equality are closely aligned with the values and promise of Girlguiding so rather than being just about sport, this challenge is about trying new things, working together and doing your best.

Money raised from sales of the badge will be going towards our county properties so they can host new experiences and adventures for our young members long into the future.

There are 5 parts to the challenge with a range of different activities and suggested UMA connections. The badge is aimed at all sections and can be adapted to the needs of your unit. There are no specific requirements to earn the badge, the most important thing is to have fun, but we suggest that you undertake at least one activity from each part.

Training Brooches

Well done to all our members who have been working hard and already achieved their Training Brooches!

Do You have yours!

These brooches are to thank leaders who give up even more of their time to make sure they keep up to date for their volunteer role. This includes both e-learning, virtual training and face to face training - so doing your safe space, first response or simply attending our county day will give you hours towards your first brooch.

Record cards are available to print from the county website, so you can record what you do and then apply to the office for your hard-earned brooches. It also explains how to count your hours and what can be included.
