Leadership Institute: Out & Authentic

Excitement is building for the 2024 Leadership Institute, co-hosted by Cascadia College and the University of Washington, Bothell. Both institutions have LGBTQ leaders in the president and chancellor roles respectively.

The institute features an opening keynote on October 16, by Joshua Moon Johnson, Provost & Vice President of Academic Affairs at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, entitled "Lifting as We Climb." To end that day, we are pleased to have Ronni Sanlo, Professor of Higher Education (retired) and former Director of the UCLA Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Campus Resource Center. Sanlo is the founder of Lavender Graduation, and will present "Our Fabulous Story: Creating Change through Time." The Institute continues on October 17 and closes with a plenary speech by Emily Drabinski, Associate Professor and Librarian at Queens College (CUNY) and Immediate Past President of the American Library Association. She will discuss her experiences in that role in a talk about "Leading in Crisis: Lessons from the Library."

More program information is available on our event website. Registration continues until October 8, 2024.

NOTE that our room block at McMenamin’s Anderson School Hotel is sold out. We have added two more suggestions on our event website.

Honoring Our Founders

Also at the Leadership Institute, we will recognize and honor the founders of the LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education by inaugurating a new annual award, called the Founders Award. For this, the first award, we will recognize three of the originals: Raymond Crossman, Theo Kalikow, and Charles Middleton. Join us to honor them for being their Out and Authentic selves and showing us the way. Leadership matters.

2024 Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the LGBTQ Leaders in Higher Education will take place on October 16 at the Institute. Members will have the opportunity to vote on a strategic plan, recently endorsed by the Board of Directors. The draft strategic plan, which will guide the organization through 2027, is available on our web page here. We will have a free virtual discussion on Zoom for feedback and questions on September 30 at 2 pm Eastern, 11 am Pacific. See more information and register on our website

Members will also be asked to ratify a slate of candidates for Board membership that includes Joe Bertolino, President of Stockton University; Manny Velasquez, Director, Career Education at University of North Florida; and Gillian McKnight-Tutein, Chief Educational Equity Officer for the Colorado Department of Higher Education. Candidate information will be added to the website and an official notice and agenda will be sent out in June to all members eligible to vote.

Upcoming Webinars

There is still time to sign up for our first webinar of the fall season: a free webinar on Voter Education for LGBTQ+ Students on August 28. We have joined a coalition of nonpartisan LGBTQ+ organizations to shape discussions on public policy, fight for equality and advance LGBTQ+ rights through voting. Orlando Gonzales will discuss efforts to help LGBTQ+ college and university students learn about election issues and voting rights.

Newly added webinar: Queering STEM focuses on the challenges and opportunities LGBTQ+ people face in the academic sciences. This webinar is free for members and $25 for nonmembers.
