Injury Rehabilitation Series Shin Splints
Anatomy and Function of the Shin
An Excerpt from Healthy Running Step by Step - Robert Forster, Pt
The term shin splints is a catchall phrase that refers to nearly all pain in the lower leg except calf and Achilles tendon injuries. There are two types: anterior shin splints and medial shin splints. Anterior shin splints appear as pain in the fleshy muscle in the front of the lower leg. Although this injury is common when runners first begin running after a layoff, it is rarely serious or persistent.
Medial shin splints (technically termed a periostitis), which appear on the inside border of the lower leg bone (tibia), are much worse. They occur from overpronation when you run too far too soon, straining tendons that attach to the tibia and pulling the periosteum, the paper-thin tissue covering of all bones, away from the shin bone.

New York Times
IMAM KHOMEINI AIRPORT, Iran - When the United States wrestling team arrived at 3 a.m. on Saturday at an airport hotel outside
Iran's capital, Tehran, staff members ordered out for pizza.
"We were all over the lobby, eating out of the boxes," said Rich Bender, the executive director of Team USA. The wrestlers had just flown in from the western Iranian city of Kermanshah, where the team lost the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup to Iran, in a series of thrilling matches.

David Taylor the Hero as US Falls to Iran
David Taylor was unquestionably the wrestler of the tournament, helping America to a second place finish at the 2017 Freestyle World Cup. Over the course of two days, the Magicman upended not one, not two, but three Olympic medalists, including a reigning champion. His low single, scrambling ability and unmatchable pace and gas tank carried him to his victories.

How Gut Bacteria Help Make us Fat and Thin
By Scientific America
For the 35 percent of American adults who do daily battle with obesity, the main causes of their condition are all too familiar: an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle and perhaps some unlucky genes. In recent years, however, researchers have become increasingly convinced that important hidden players literally lurk in human bowels: billions on billions of gut microbes.

Rainy Day Recipe: Slow Simmered White Bean and Ham Soup
Everyday Health
My favorite days to cook are cold and stormy days. There is something so comforting to me about simmering food all day long while it's miserable outside. Watching a good movie while you cook is even better!! It has been very rainy and cold here in Oregon lately so I have gathered together some of my favorite rainy day recipes.

4 Steps to Your Perfect Marathon Taper
- Ben Rosario TrainingPeaks
I have often said that in many ways coaching the marathon is the easiest of any of the distances. The mile, the 5k, the 10k and even the half marathon distances require athletes and coaches to put together a perfect blend of multiple training zones in the weeks and months leading up to the big day. But for the marathon, for the most part, it's just a steady diet of long, grinding workouts at or near marathon pace that gets the job done. That is, until those last two weeks.
