A 'Progressive' Lens
As I was looking forward to September and the beginning of the Season of Creation, I found myself visualizing typical images which are likely to appear as part of worship services, especially those using projection technology. I think we tend to gravitate (interesting word in this context) toward serenity, glowing sunrises, dramatic sunsets, cute animals and similar nature-related photographs and illustrations. I include myself among those who are moved by these images.
While sitting with eyes closed imagining these 'creation' visuals, an alert came through the laptop which has almost become a permanent evolutionary attachment to my frontal thighs. The alert was announcing yet another new discovery by the James Webb telescope of something that "shouldn’t be there".
I confess that I often wonder what the impact of these developing Webb discoveries is going to have in terms of our core understandings of science — and theology. Concepts of a flat planet and the earth being perceived as the centre of the universe are still clearly visible in our rearview mirror.
Like the dynamic development of the words and melodies we choose to sing, we can look forward to surprising creation-based images being added to our already vast and rapidly growing libraries. What an exciting — and creative — time to be a speck in the universe! RK
