In addition to 17 education hours, attendees were treated to events matching the Family Medicine Takes the Crown theme. Mississippi Medical Student Elected to AAFP Board of Directors
Mississippi's own Richard Easterling, a M4 at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, was elected July 30 to represent students on the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors. The election took place among students attending the AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students in Kansas City, held July 28-30.

Easterling, who plans to pursue family medicine in the MATCH 2023, will now attend AAFP Board meetings and represent the voice of the medical student membership.

Easterling is well-known to many MAFP members, having served as the student board member on the MAFP Board in 2021-22 and attended MAFP events since then. He is in his second year as president of the Family Medicine Interest Group at UMMC and will serve this year as the student board member for the MAFP Foundation Board of Trustees.
Family Medicine at the Mississippi State Medical Association's Annual Session

Family medicine will be well-represented at the Mississippi State Medical Association's 154th Annual Session and House of Delegates, which will be held August 11-13 in Flowood. Jennifer Gholson, MD, of Summit, will be MAFP's official delegate.

Several family physicians are on the MSMA ballot and we encourage you as always to consider your fellow members when voting. MAFP members are indicated on the linked ballot. The election will take place Saturday, Aug. 13. Delegate registration and clicker pick-up will take place from 12 noon - 1 pm and no clickers will be distributed after 1 pm.

Monkeypox Cases Reported in Mississippi

Monkeypox has been declared a public health emergency in the United States. As of Wednesday, Aug. 3, the United States had 6,617 cases of monkeypox, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Mississippi reported four cases on that report. The infographic above was issued by the Department of Health and Human Services.

AAFP will host a live town hall meeting about monkeypox Tuesday, August 9 at 7 pm central. Visit the AAFP Facebook page to watch it live. We will post the meeting on Family Medicine Strong (our members-only page) afterwards.

NRMP Seeking Feedback on Proposed 2-Phase Match, Nixing SOAP
National Resident Matching Program (NMRP) announced Aug. 2 that they are seeking public comment on a proposed 2-phase MATCH program that would eliminate the SOAP. Here is your opportunity to provide your suggestions to NRMP. The deadline for feedback is Sept. 2. Click here to read more about the proposal.
Mississippi School Telehealth Begins
The University of Mississippi Medical Center has launched its school telehealth program with 100 school districts and 668 schools being phased in throughout the school year. This week, several family physicians took part in a 1-hour town hall with UMMC officials - hosted by the American Academy of Pediatrics Mississippi Chapter - to explain the details of the program.

In February 2022, UMMC was chosen by the Mississippi Department of Education to receive a $17.6 million grant to create a telehealth delivery system within K-12 schools, using American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. The grant will be completed Sept. 30, 2024.

If family physicians are interested in accepting referrals of local students from the telehealth program, they may contact schooltelehealth@umc.edu or (601) 815-2020.
Membership Passes Eight Resolutions
The MAFP membership passed 8 resolutions at its Annual Business Session July 18. The resolutions will now move forward to the AAFP Congress of Delegates in September. Mississippi's AAFP delegates who will attend the Congress of Delegates include Katie Patterson, MD, FAAFP, of Indianola; P. Brent Smith, MD, FAAFP, of Cleveland; and Alternates Jennifer Gholson, MD, of Summit; and J. Dustin Gentry, MD, FAAFP, of Louisville.
