2024 MAFP Family Physician of the Year
The Family Physician of the Year award is presented annual to the physician contributing the most to the development of Family Medicine in the state. This honor recognizes a physician that provides his/her community with compassionate and comprehensive medical service on a continuous bases.
Our 2024 recipient is a homegrown product who graduated medical school at UMMC. His leadership qualities were evident early on as he was elected president of his Senior medical school class.
Upon completion of military service, he initially set his sights on a different specialty. However, it was while moonlighting at a community hospital ER that he would develop a love for Family Medicine as well as that community…and they for him! And in 1973 he hung out his shingle there as a solo family physician.
Community service has always characterized his practice. He provided ER coverage in the evenings, performed minor surgery, and delivered babies along with providing free sports physicals and indigent care on his Saturdays off at a local church.
His tenure of service hasn’t been without personal challenges. Several years ago he was diagnosed with lymphoma, but he persevered to return to care for his patients without an consideration of leaving “the trenches of medical care.”
Our honoree has served as preceptor for many medical students including one who was so inspired by his commitment and compassion that he returned to join him as a partner.
We are proud to announce that our 2024 Family Physician of the Year is Dr. John Paul Lee of Forest.

2024 MAFP New Physician of the Year
The New Physician of the Year award is given to one outstanding family physician each year who completed residency training within the last seven years.
Our 2024 recipient completed a Family Medicine residency in 2018 and has become a force in both her community and organized medicine. She has built a thriving practice but took time during the pandemic to host her own Saturday morning public “Zoom” podcast providing updates about Covid as well as other healthcare topics. She has been hailed as a true gift not only to her community but also to our Mississippi family physician family.
And I guess you could say of our recipient that the apple did not fall far from the tree. The future of our specialty rests with our young family physicians and we are proud to announce that our 2024 MAFP New Physician of the Year is Dr. Emily Brandon Landrum of Starkville.

This year’s MAFP Humanitarian Award recognizes a family physician who has provided medical care for her underserved rural community of Fayette for more than fifty years. Her service has inspired the next generation of female physicians and healthcare providers to pursue their dreams regardless of gender, ethnicity, or obstacles faced. Her life story is inspirational - so much so that her life and service were recognized by Hon Bennie Thompson in the Congressional Record in 2021.
A 1958 graduate of Patna Medical College, this year’s winner has over 65 years of experience in the medical field. Having been an AAFP member for 57 years, she is currently the second longest tenured member - what an accomplishment. After a lot of convincing from her children, she retired from actively practicing during the Covid-19 Pandemic. She now spends her free time rereading MAFP Journals and keeping up to date on all things family medicine.
We are proud to announce that our 2024 Humanitarian Award winner is Dr. Shanti Pandey of Fayette.

Inaugural Katie Patterson Award
The MAFP Katie Patterson Award for Excellence in Physician Mentorship has been established to recognize a physician who actively provides guidance and encouragement to medical students and residents and who contributes to the personal and professional development of future Family Medicine leaders.
The Katie Patterson Award was named in memory of the late Dr. Katie Patterson – a friend to all and tireless advocate for medical students, residents, and family medicine across the state of Mississippi. Dr. Patterson created an incredible legacy while she was with us; one that will live on through the lives of everyone she touched.
Our inaugural winner embodies many of these attributes reminding us of Dr. Patterson in many ways. He has long been a tireless advocate for resident and student issues, serving always as an available mentor. His engagement and generosity in all aspects of organized medicine make him an excellent role model.
We are proud to announce our inaugural Katie Patterson Award winner, Dr. Carlos Latorre of Vicksburg.
