Dillard Joins MAFP Staff

MAFP staff is pleased to welcome DeAnna Dillard of Clinton as Outreach Director and Grant Coordinator. She will handle the Foundation's grant from the Office of Tobacco Control and work with Mississippi's family medicine residencies and medical students.

DeAnna's first order of business is scheduling clinics to participate in a Lunch and Learn on tobacco cessation. Could your clinic take part in this program? It's free, we come to you, plus MAFPF provides lunch and CME hours.

As the owner of Dillard Consulting, a business consulting and association management company, DeAnna's career includes roles as executive director, chief financial officer, and chief operating officer at organizations dedicated to a variety of social causes, including public policy, economic development, and health care.

As a strategic partner to non-profits, DeAnna blends her passion for social impact with sound business expertise to help organizations meet their goals. Achievements have included igniting growth, bolstering program support, and multiplying grant funding 250%.

DeAnna holds a master’s degree in Nonprofit Administration and the IOM designation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute of Organizational Management.

She shares a love for nature and music with her husband, Dr. Benji Dillard, Division Chief of General Pediatrics at UMMC, and they are parents to Anna Grace, an ICU nurse, and Jacob, a graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University.

Ebola Webinar to be Held Wednesday;

Melioidosis Webinar to be Held Thursday

THE CDC is offering a webinar with CME available on the topic "Update on 2022 Ebola Outbreak in Uganda' on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at 2 pm CT. While the risk of individuals with travel associated Ebola presenting to a Mississippi facility is very low, MSDH is asking physicians to identify patients with recent travel to Uganda (21 days), isolate symptomatic patients, and call MSDH immediately with any suspected cases.

The next day, the CDC is offering a webinar titled, “Melioidosis in the United States: What Clinicians Need to Know Following Newly Discovered Endemicity” on Thursday October 13, 2022, from 1-2 pm CT. This webinar is particularly important to physicians and providers in Mississippi due to the recent discovery of the causative bacteria in environmental samples in the state, representing the first time this bacterium has been identified in environmental samples in the US.

Both webinars are provided by by CDC Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA).

Vaccine Resources Available for FPs

Vaccines are one of the best preventive health tools we have. But vaccine misinformation is a real threat to public health and with increased hesitancy, deadly disease outbreaks will happen. We raise family physician voices and support you in important patient conversations. To that end, AAFP has released new vaccine resources for family physicians, including reference pages, a waiting room sign, and reminder email templates.

These e-mail templates can be employed by your staff to remind parents to bring their children to the clinic for vaccines.

Waiting Room Print-Out - What Your Doctor Wants You to Know About Vaccines for Kids

Physician Fact Sheet - Vaccine Safety System

Physician Reference - Anticipatory Guidance for Adult Vaccination

All of these resources and more are available on the AAFP's Immunizations and Vaccines page.

Academy Hosts Residency Coordinator Call with STFM

Mary Theobald (pictured), Chief of Strategy and Innovation for Kansas City-based Society for Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), conducted a webinar with Mississippi's family medicine residency coordinators Sept. 29.

Theobald discussed updated ACGME guidelines and how to adapt residency programs to meet the new requirements. Almost 100% of Mississippi's family medicine programs were represented on the call.

The follow-up from this event has proven very successful. The MAFP will continue to be a resource for FM residency program directors and coordinators by hosting similar meetings in the future.
