The PTO uses the King Soopers’ Community

Rewards program as one of our annual fund raisers. King Soopers contributes a percentage of your grocery sales to the non-profit of your choice with quarterly payments to us. All you do is enter your Rewards number each time you shop. Last year 132 TJ families participated, earning the PTO over $6,800.

We use these funds to support our Teacher Appreciation program and provide funding to our Class Committees. Have you signedup yet? Or perhaps need to change the beneficiary from your previous school to TJ? Click here for more instructions. The PTO’s organization name is Thomas Jefferson High School

Partners, or use code UT036. Thank you to all who currently participate!

Please reach out if you have any questions/comments/concerns. The PTO is a great resource!

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips

Did You Know…?

(en español)

Walking in nature can change your brain!

Points to ponder:

  • Studies have shown that urban dwellers have a higher incidence of psychological problems (when compared to people living near parks).
  • Brooding, is a mental state familiar to most of us, can be described as “preoccupied with depressing, morbid, or painful memories or thoughts.”
  • Brooding is not helpful or healthy, and can be a precursor to depression. It is disproportionately common in city dwellers.
  • In a small-scale study (Bratman, 2014), pre and post test data suggested that those subjects who walked in nature (versus path near busy road) showed improvements in their mental health and brain scans- they reported less focus and attention spent on the negative aspects of their lives, when compared to before the walk.
  • Note: during the walk, the subjects were not allowed to have companions or listen to music, but they were allowed to walk at their own pace.

So:

  • These results suggest that getting into natural environments could be an easy, accessible and almost immediate way to improve moods for city living folk!
  • Now go take a walk!
