Greetings fellow artists, workers, citizens. What an exciting Spring this will be! On 3/10 we get another hour of daylight. Spring represents new life / new beginnings, so Spring Clean and Declutter to continue to move your life path forward positively. Also get outside and breathe..

I saw my first Spring flower two days ago. A beautiful little yellow daffodil plant was growing next to a white picket fence near us in Long Beach. It was such a lovely sight. It reminded me of the anticipation and resiliency that Spring flowers represent as they reach for the warmer sunnier weather each year..never worrying that it will not happen. Having faith.

We anticipate an exciting Spring season on Broadway - 18 Shows Opening! A Super Spring at Ripley-Grier as we launch our "RG Premiere Membership" Program for out talented clients and the many supportive friends we've made over the years - offering special deals, booking perks and discounts. First number of clients get a reward. More info in this March Newsletter.

On March 5th, 52 years ago, I taught my first fitness class at The Lotte Berk Method on E. 67th St. in Manhattan. I worked in a boutique on East 53rd Street called Irene Allen's and I waitressed at Pear Restaurant on the East Side near the UN Building. I did not do well at either job. Formerly a bartender and night club manager in Asbury Park and working in the Music Management business, I was not really suited for upscale shops and restaurants. When a friend came to stay with us and tried out for a fitness inustructor's job, she came back from the interview and said they were looking for women that looked like me and who were fit. I was hired but it was grueling and my boss, Lydia Bach, was a combination den mother and finishing school marm. Very fit and very connected, she put us through intense training and grooming. I had rough edges with a lot of Jersey mannerisms and speech. All her instructors took Ballet, Jazz, and Middle Eastern Dance classes from the best teachers in NYC. We learned how to do our hair and makeup from experts. She took us to the top restaurants (my first sushi meal was at the Waldorf). She gave us Indian philosophers to read and absorb. We were weighed monthly and there was a penalty if we went over our prescribed weight. We taught major VIP's in NYC - actresses, models, socialites, entertainers and diplomats. My former students include Carly Simon, Ali McGraw, Candice Bergen, the Hemmingways, Betty Buckley, Eileen Ford (all the Ford Models), Elaine Steinbeck and even Ivana Trump (who was a lovely woman). I loved it and thrived. I managed the New York & Bridgehampton Studios. I worked with Lydia for 7 years. In 1982 I opened my own place on W. 72nd St. and teach there still. Through fitness I have stayed healthy and through teaching I have been able to interact with many types of people, which has been a gift. Thank you to my current students who help keep me sharp and fit.

Continue your fitness and healthy habits, start new ones.

Better and Better, Patricia

CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF TEACHING FITNESS!!!

Hi everyone!

So far I've been keeping up with all of the shows I've been wanting to see. Since writing my last article I've seen Sweeney Todd, Shucked, Little Shop of Horrors, Purlie Victorious, and Merrily We Roll Along!

I was able to see Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford a few days before their last performances in Sweeney Todd. They were both great, and I thought Annaleigh's performance was hilarious. They both came out of the stage door after the show to sign playbills along with a few other cast members.

I saw the final matinee of Shucked and I'm glad I saw it before it closed! The jokes were corny (in the best way) and the whole cast worked great together.

Corbin Bleu and Constance Wu's last performance of Little Shop together was on 1/28, and I saw it the week before. I got to fulfill a childhood dream of meeting Corbin Bleu after the show, and he was so nice and took the time to have conversations with everyone who stayed.

I hadn't heard much about Purlie Victorious, but I had never seen Leslie Odom Jr. so I knew I had to see it. I ended up loving the play, and the cast was full of amazing actors. I found out that they were taping the performance I was at. Most of the cast came out to greet fans after celebrating the taping.

Finally, I saw what is now my favorite show currently on Broadway - Merrily We Roll Along. I knew the basics of the story, some of the music, and I knew it was by Stephen Sondheim, but that was it. I was blown away by the show, and Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez had incredible chemistry together. Another childhood dream of mine was fulfilled by meeting Daniel Radcliffe at the stage door. He also took the time to get to everyone, signing playbills, taking selfies, and conversing. I'm so excited to see it again!

Also, after years of wanting to see John Williams conduct, I saw him at Carnegie Hall with Yo-Yo Ma! It was an incredible night of music, mostly from the Indiana Jones movies, and then he came back out for an encore and did the theme from Star Wars and The Imperial March!

Until next time, Jeannie
