Check out what's new at the Library!
Newsletter - July 2022
Letter from the Director
Dear Friends,

Summer is now upon us and with it comes Summer Reading for all ages! Our theme this year is Read Beyond the Beaten Path. For kids and teens, there will be Summer Reading Bingo as well as a Summer Park Quest Contest. Also, for the first time ever, we will be running Summer Reading for Adults! That’s right, Summer Reading isn’t just for kids anymore! You too can read to earn a chance to win prizes. Please read our department articles in this newsletter to learn the details about what is going on in each department.

Now, for the question that everyone has been asking: When is the library going to re-open? I know that we had last said that we would be opening our doors at the end of June and here we are in July. Unfortunately, there have been on-going problems getting materials that continue to delay the project. At this point, we still do not have an opening date. Please be assured that as soon as we have one, I will let you know.

As you know, we continue to offer browsing and material pick-ups in the front lobby of the 1897 House (the brown brick building.) Sometime during the month of July, all services will be shut down for one week while our staff relocates to the renovated portion of the building. This will allow construction crews to complete the areas where staff has been working. During that time, we will be unable to answer phones, check email, or check materials out, but book drops will continue to be open for returns. Please watch our Facebook and email announcements for updates on when this will take place.

During the week we are closed, consider looking into our new Hoopla Flex collection of downloadable ebook and audiobook bestsellers. You may have used Hoopla’s Always Available titles before to check out older book titles, but now with Hoopla Flex, you have access to current bestsellers plus the ability to request new online materials for purchase. Just download the Hoopla app and create a free account using your library barcode. Scroll down to the Popular Flex sections to see frontlist titles. Click on the Search link to look for current bestsellers and to make purchase requests. Flex titles are not Always Available, so you may have to go on a hold list if a book is currently checked out.

Remember, keep your eye on your email and the library Facebook account for updates!
Adult Summer Reading
Summer Reading isn’t just for kids anymore! Adults can participate by reading and/or listening to books that you check out in person or online. You can participate completely online (prizes must be picked up in person), by filling out an online form and sending a weekly email with the books you are reading and/or the programs you are attending to: nmcirc@biblio.org

Be sure to check out all the amazing programs we are having this summer at: https://bit.ly/nmplprograms

Our program to kick-off Summer Reading for Adults and Families will be at The Maxx, on Tuesday, 7/5 at 7 PM. The White Memorial Conservation Center will be doing a presentation on the amazing and helpful bat! A live bat ambassador will be in attendance.

In keeping with our summer reading theme, on Wednesday, 7/6, we will be learning to decorate Camp Fire cupcakes with The Baking Coach! 3 premade cupcakes per registration, and all frosting and decorations will be provided. Cupcake kits are scheduled to arrive Friday 7/1, so please call ahead if you plan to pick them up on Friday. Pick up will also be available on Saturday 7/2, at The Marsh Parish House. Please call the Library with questions: 860-355-1191. Hope to see you at all of our programs in July and August!

Sparkler
The CT Office of Early Childhood is making the Sparkler mobile app available for free to all families in Connecticut with children 0-5 years old. It's a fun app that parents and caregivers can use to spark healthy early childhood development. Sparkler offers: screen-free educational playtime activities; tips for parents; and connections to local supports and resources, including Help Me Grow CT and 211 Child Development. Access Sparkler in your mobile app and sign up to personalize the program.

When you download the app, you and your child can also participate in Camp Sparkler. Camp Sparkler begins on July 4 and runs for eight weeks. (English and Spanish). Each week, families will find fun, off-screen playtime activities on a new theme — like "Astronaut" or "Storyteller" — designed to help grow children's hearts, minds, bodies, and words. Plus, Camp Sparkler will offer weekly story times for each theme led by Connecticut librarians.

Kathryn -
Finding Me is Viola Davis' story, in her own words, and spans her incredible, inspiring life, from her coming-of-age in Rhode Island to her present day. Hers is a story of overcoming, a true hero's journey.  She describes her home life matter-of-factly, though she never downplays how horrifying it was to live through it
