It's Legislative Season!

The MAFP Advocacy Committee along with our lobbyist, Hope Ladner, is gearing up for Legislative Season 2023.We need as many of our members at the Capitol next month to meet with legislators on matters pertaining to family medicine.

MAFP Capitol Day Set for February 7

MAFP has joined forces with the Mississippi Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MSAAP) for Primary Care Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, February 7 from 8:00am until 1:00pm. Please wear your white coat and join us this year!


We’ll kick things off with a tour of the capitol, then visit the House and Senate galleries. During the morning, we will invite the legislators to stop by our table for visits, photos and a special gift. We will walk across the street to Galloway United Methodist Church for a member lunch with a special guest.


In addition to receiving a guided tour of the Capitol, and a tour of the Capitol Medical Unit, all Capitol Day attendees will receive lunch and special family physician swag.


There is no fee to attend, but please register here so we can plan for your arrival.

MAFP Announces Candidacy

of Dr. Brent Smith for the

AAFP Board of Directors


The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians announces the candidacy of Patrick Brent Smith, MD MLS MSc FAAFP of Cleveland, for the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors. 

 

Dr. Smith is a practicing family physician in Indianola, Mississippi as well as faculty at the Mississippi Delta Family Medicine Residency Program in Greenville, MS. Smith returned to the Delta to practice after completing his training in 2013, and spent 9 years providing traditional family medicine in Cleveland and Ruleville, MS.

On January 25, AAFP will send final notice letters to members who have not paid their 2023 dues and/or lack CME. We appreciate your membership and look forward to keeping family medicine strong in Mississippi.

Know a High School Senior?

We've Got a Scholarship Available!


High school seniors are eligible to apply for the $1,000 the David G. Hall, MD Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the MAFP Foundation.

 

To apply, students must write a 500-word essay and send it in along with an application and transcript by the deadline of Feb. 25, 2023. Winners will be chosen from qualified applicants and notified by May 1.

 

Essays must be titled "The Family Physician: Providing Your Medical Home" and the essay should "Describe the impact of a family physician in your life or the life of your family and/or the role of the family physician in your community. In what ways do family physicians strengthen the various aspects of the community?"

 

The 2022 Winning Essay was written by Jamya High of Ripley High School about family physician Dr. Troy Cappleman of Ripley.

National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL) Search for Delegates


The NCCL is the AAFP's leadership development event that empowers a select group of change makers to catalyze positive change in family medicine. NCCL will inspire you to build on your leadership skills and create a lasting impact for current and future generations of family physicians.


The annual conference is scheduled for May 9 - May 11, 2023 in Kansas City, MO. NCCL constituencies include: women, minorities, new physicians (in the first seven years of practice following residency), international medical graduates (IMG) from schools outside the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, and LGBTQ+. The conference offers and opportunity for members to voice their individual and group perspectives.
