Round Rock City Council approved a contract at its Jan. 14 meeting that will widen University Boulevard from A.W. Grimes Boulevard to SH 130. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2021 and conclude in late 2022. The expansion of University Boulevard from the North IH-35 frontage road to Sunrise Boulevard is already under way. Construction began in late 2020 and is expected to ramp up in the coming months and conclude in 2023.

The Round Rock City Council voted unanimously at its Thursday, Jan. 14 meeting to designate Sheppard Street in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Round Rock Black History Organization held a small ceremony Saturday, Jan. 16, to recognize the addition of the historic civil rights leader's name to signs along Sheppard Street in Downtown Round Rock. The street will maintain the name Sheppard Street and include honorary signage for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Round Rock City Council approved Jan. 14 an economic development agreement with a nano-technology manufacturer to relocate to Settlers Crossing in Round Rock, invest $8.7 million and create nearly 150 jobs. Ametrine, Inc. is a manufacturer of unique, advanced multispectral camouflage systems and produces patented nano-technology materials.

Construction is now taking place on the new Heritage Trail West. Due to this construction, Memorial Park will be closed for several months. The project includes a 10-foot-wide trail spanning from Chisholm Trail Road to Mays Street and includes improvements at Bathing Beach Park, Chisholm Trail Crossing Park and Memorial Park. Construction will take approximately 18 months and is expected to be completed in 2022.
